Rick,

I'm the Ramsay / Ramsey DNA Project Coordinator and I'm familiar with your Ramsey Heritage and I believe you are related to several of our Ramsey DNA members.

I can tell you through DNA testing I found immediately 2 other major Ramsey families that matched my Ramsey family and in just about 4 years now we're a group of 18 major Ramsey families.

I believe that your Ramsey family holds the DNA key to solving several heritage questions and if your Ramsey family would participate in the Ramsey DNA Project I believe your line would DNA connect with several other Ramsey families and that will narrow your search and lead to finding addition Ramsey branches that are related to you.

If you’re interested in learning more about our Ramsey Heritage Quest we encourage you to visit our web site http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ramsey/indexDNA.htm.... You can view our latest Ramsey DNA results by clicking on the scrolling Results Marque and please also information about joining our Ramsay DNA family.

I would encourage you to pass along this correspondence to your Ramsey family.

Drop me an email and I'll be glad to answer your questions.

Regards,

John Hendrickson

Do any Ramsey researchers have ties in Kentucky or Tennessee. I have a grgrgrandmother, Nancy Jane Ramsey, born 1853 TN, but I've not been able to prove her parents. She married John Marion Shepherd about 1870 Whitley Co KY. Some researchers say her parents were James C. Ramsey and Milly Sloan, but I've never found proof. They divorced in 1860. Since I'm not a male, I can't do the DNA.

My ties to White Co AR are through the McLaughlins & Coombes in Bald Knob AR. I also have Whites and French surnames in the area. If anyone has ties to any of these lines, I would be happy to share what I have.

Thanks everyone,
Johnnie Mc

Johnnie,

I'm the Ramsey DNA Coordinator and live in Knoxville TN and I have most of the East TN Ramsey identified and or DNA tested and many of these families moved to West TN, MO and KY. Give me someone specific in your line and I should be able to answer your question.

John

James C. Ramsey born 1805 NC d. 1880 Whitley Co KY. He may have been son of John Ramsey born 1776 Henry Co VA & Mary Polly Horsey 1808-1870. Their daughter (I hope), Nancy Jane Ramsey born 11 Jan 1853 TN died 26 Jan 1892 McCreary Co KY. She married John Marion Shepherd. James & Milly Sloan Ramsey also had sons: Nelson Ramsey born 1834 died after 1876, William Rice Ramsey born 1836 died 1886 Wayne Co KY; John Ramsey born 23 Sep 1837 Wayne Co KY died 11 Apr 1896 Wayne Co KY; Baley Ramsey born 13 Mar 1844 Wayne Co KY died 11 Nov 1920 Whitley Co KY.

Does that give you anything to go by? I don't know if any of their children migrated to AR or not. They also had three other daughters besides Nancy Jane.

Thank you so much for your help. I've been looking for information on this family for many years to no avail.

Johnnie,

Nancy Jane Ramsey -was she also married to a Trammel?

We have her in our Data Base but not as a Ramsey so we have little on her.

Johnnie,

James C Ramsey and Milly Sloan I have based on piecing together several heritage files as part of our DNA kit 102834 but falls in HAPLO Group 1 and Family 9. This also happens to be the same family that the Earl of Dalhousie Castle tested as.

I still have some reservations about the lack of pure documentation for several Ramsey families from this area of KY so Johnnie if you are a Ramsey or in contact with a male Ramsey from this line from AR I believe then that DNA could unravle this mystery that you and others have delt with for decades. Take a look at our DNA results page and find kit 102834. This kit is reported to be from the Nelson Ramsey line son to John C Ramsey. Do you have another living Ramsey from a different branch that is a living male Ramsey?

Family history has her name as Nancy Jane Ramsey Trammell Shepherd. Some say she was adopted by a family named Trammell after James & Milly Ramsey divorced, but I can't find her on a census with that name. I don't think she was married to a Trammell because she married John Marion Shepherd at age 17 about 1871. My grgrandfather, their first child, was born 11 Jan 1872.

If you can't do Jane, what about James Ramsey, her father. If I could find clues on him, I might find more on Jane.

You seem to have quite an extensive database.
Thanks for the reply.

John,

Thank you for taking the time with me. I'm sorry I don't have a male Ramsey for this test that I know about.

I'll keep your information in case I come across someone. One question and you'll see I'm a little dumb about the DNA testing. Does it have to be a Ramsey? It can't be a descendant of a Ramsey? I would fall into the Shepherd line on this family.

Thank you again,
Johnnie Mc

Johnnie,

Yes it has to be a male Ramsey becaues the Y Chromosome is passed from father to son. That means that if we find a differnt Ramsey family with the same DNA pattern as the Nelson Ramsey line then DNA suggests that they have a common ancestor. This fact narrows your search and can prove or disprove your heritage to a group of Ramsey.

John,

Thanks for the update on the Ramsey DNA project. I appreciate you taking the time with me. I guess, for now, there isn't much I can do about this, but I'll keep your notes and maybe I'll chcek back with you from time to time to see if any progress had been made on James Ramsey & Milly Sloan that you might know about - if that is okay.

Thanks again for all your help.
