My family is also from Jud Brasov, near Fagaras. My fathers family is from that area. His father was a Cornea (Zacharie, I've been told) from Eleni, (just south of Fagaras) and his wife was Eva Rotaru from Vad, near Sercia.
They married in Martin's Ferry, Ohio in 1908, and lived there and in Alliance and Massillon, Stark County, Ohio. A lot of people from Eleni and Fagaras went to those cities.
I visited around 1972. I stayed with my Rotaru family in Vad. My great uncle Jacob was still alive at the time and in his mid-90s. He had come to the US with my grandmother, and then returned home before WW I. Apparently although they married in Ohio, my grandparents courted in Ardeal.
I stayed in Vad with my cousin Gheorghe Rotaru, and his wife Valaritsa. I also visited with other relatives, Agliya Rotaru, and Letitia Pasararu. Letitia's father was the schoolteacher, and her mother had a loom and wove. Agliya's father had a wagon and used to cart things. Gheorghe drove trucks.
At the time, I was told by a Cornea relative that I would get in major strife if I was found looking into genealogy. He said that because it reinforced the traditional class system, it was seen as anti-communist, and people had been arrested for it.
I was only about 19, and I lost touch a couple of years after I left. The Ceaucescu regime made it difficult to reestablish connection.
Anyone having any other information about the community in Vad, or any information on the Cornea or Rotaru families of Vad, Eleni, or Fagaras, I would love to find out more about them.
Some of the others here mentioned their relatives came from that area to Martins Ferry. Anyone interested in looking into the Romanian migration to that area, I'm interested in that also.
