I have to agree with you Arkiedan. Gramps is totally non-intuitive. The GUI is, well, reminds me of windows 3.1 programming. I have tried to post to them to update it with more intuitive GUI but not have heard back from them. I use it every once in a while and do update the software just to see if the have improved it. But I have stayed with ancestry.com

Good luck.

I use it. Needs a Linux machine to run on, not available for Windows. Comprehensive, reliable but I found it's not the easiest to use. Try the more user-friendly Family Tree Builder (for Windows).

I have been running gramps on windows for a few years now. I tried a few other free programs, but didn't like them as much as gramps. Since then I have bought FTM (Family Tree Maker) but have not used it enough to get familiar with it.

There are people in the community that port the software on a regular basis to Windows and Mac. It is developed as a Linux software, though.

Once you get over the learning curve (the online wiki is comprehensive and a great help), it becomes easy and powerful.

Hi - I do use Gramps and have done so now for past 18 months. The more I use it the more I like it. It has the option of using "Gramplets" which are basically add on scripts which allow you to produce a myriad of reports and what have you. It is all totally free and is very actively developed by the Open Source community. I also have my copy of Legacy Family Tree that I have maintained but more and more I use Gramps as it is so fast and capable. I also use Linux operating system most of the time instead of Windows and it operates on that as well just as good as any other program. Hope this is of some help to you.

As a free software for Linux and Mac, it has it's good sides in the depth of information that it stores...and that is also it's downfall. It literally stores everything on the original GED file, even if it can't process it. You get literally pages and pages of garbage on your tree, which you must pain stakedly remove from every entry...no feature to bulk erase, as far as I have found. So anyone working with multiple plattform GED files, should avoid using GRAMPS.. is my tried and tested opinion.
