GENUKI Lancashire

THE SOCIETY was formed in 1964 and is now one of the largest family history societies in the world. Although the Society is united by a common interest in Genealogy and Family History, members also share interests in closely related fields. Many are also local historians, whilst others share an interest in the application of computers to genealogy. Monthly meetings are held in Clayton House, the Society's Library in central Manchester, where there is an invited speaker or a talk by one of the members. The full programme is given in every issue of the Journal.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BRANCHES OF THE SOCIETY
The Manchester Lancashire FHS has a growing number of branches and special interest groups.
These are :

Bolton District FHS.
Anglo-Scottish FHS.
Oldham Branch of the ML FHS.
Irish Ancestry Group.
Computer Group
Internet Group : members interests
You do not have to join each section of the society individually. Your single membership fee automatically gives you membership of all the branches and groups. If you are interested in the activities of a particular branch or group then let us know so that we know the level of interest and can let you know of any specific event that may interest you.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WHAT MEMBERSHIP CAN OFFER YOU
ON JOINING the Society, all new members receive a Factpack including a handbook which introduces you to family history sources in general, and in particular to those sources available for research in the Manchester Lancashire area. In addition, assistance and advice on how to begin tracing your ancestors, or on any problem encountered is offered, either through the pages of the Society's Journal or at our Library.

Whether you are a beginner or an experienced genealogist you can, if you wish, attend the family history courses which the Society runs.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A QUARTERLY JOURNAL, the Manchester Genealogist, is published and sent free of charge to a member's home address. This has a number of sections devoted to specific topics - computers, book reviews, articles of general interest, and up to date information on the latest developments in genealogy.

The journal also includes sections for those with interests in Bolton District FHS, and Anglo/Scottish FHS, Computer Group and Oldham Branch, (the other branches of the Society) as well as for those with Irish interests.

Members may also advertise their queries and requests for help, free of charge. A supplement accompanies each journal providing an ongoing index of surnames with areas and periods that people are researching. A master index is also kept on computer.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A LIBRARY AND STUDY ROOM situated at our headquarters in central Manchester, is open for members during the week and certain weekends. The Library collection, which consists of over 4000 individual items covers census returns indexes, parish registers, monumental inscriptions as well as printed material. Many of these indexes have been compiled by members and are not available anywhere else. It also houses the 1992/3 edition of the International Genealogical Index (IGI) covering the whole world, the recently published Old Parish Register Index for Scotland - we are one of very few groups to hold this index - and Griffiths Valuation of Ireland. The rooms are well equipped for research with Microfilm and Microfiche readers as well as photocopying facilities for both. There is also an increasing quantity of material available on our three computers.

We also have the indexes to civil registration of births, marriages deaths 1837 – 1900.

A catalogue of the Library contents is available for consultation in the Library.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The BOOKSHOP
The Society runs a bookshop with a large selection of genealogical and local history publications for sale.
These are available by mail order via our Publications Mail Order Catalogue.
Which is updated annually, free to members and now available for viewing on the web.

Non-members are welcome to order from the Bookshop

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Joining the Manchester Lancashire Family History Society
Unfortunately we cannot currently take orders via the Internet, so you'll have to write in using the old fashioned Royal Mail! or FAX, If you print out the membership form and fill it out, sending your subscription as indicated, a membership pack will be sent out to you. Please make sure that you mention that you saw the society on the Internet if you do join - the more interest members show, the easier it is to get more resources put into the computing area!

Your membership will start from the month that you join, and will become renewable annually in that month.
