Kirchhoff town of origin

Classification: Query
Surnames: Kirchhoff, Kirchoff, Ellinger, Ehlinger, Meyer
I have been seeing information concerning the 1836 French census being discussed on the board and think that it might provide information I need.

I have been looking for the town of origin for my g-grandparents who immigrated in 1871 from Alsace Lorraine. I believe that it was Alsace but I could be wrong. I found their ships manifest but it doesn't help me.

Their names were Joseph Kirch(h)off born 1851 and Mary Elinger born 1848 (may have been spelled Ehlinger). Joseph Kirchhoff's father was named Michael or Michel. Mary Ellinger's parents names were H Ellinger and Mary Meyer (not sure of the spelling). Both sets of parents were certain to have been born before 1836 although they might not have been married yet.

I was hoping to find a Michael Kirchhoff and a Mary Ellinger living in the same general area. I would guess their ages to be between 5-20. This might give me a place to focus my research.

Can anyone tell me where I could get access to a 1836 census? I looked on the LDS site and didn't see anything. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks
