Mack and Sallie Montgomery are listed in the 1870 census with sons William and James they were African American and lived in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. James was my great grandfather. The family is not listed in the 1880 census and the 1890 census for Alabama was destroyed in a fire. James reappears in the 1900 census and I have his marriage record from 1892.
I am looking for info on Mack, Sallie and William. I cannot find anything on them that confirms they are my ggrandfathers family but,the age of James and their location makes them the closest match I can find.
Does anyone have any info that might help me? Maybe a family story or something. My ggrandfather lived in the same county all of his adult life but I know nothing about his family or his childhood. Was there an epidemic or a disaster during that time in that area that would have caused the family to split up or caused the death of one or all of them? William was 3yoa and James was 7 1/2 months old.
I find several Mack Montgomery's in later censuses, but no info with Sallie or indication that he was widowed. Additionally, I believe that Mack and/or Sallie may have been tied to slaveowner Charles Montgomery of that county. Sallie and William are listed as mulatto, Mack and James as black. I also wonder if Mack was a nickname or short for something else.
Mack was a farmworker as was James who married Lilly Crockett in 1892 and had 7 children(Thomas, Ezra aka Lonnie, Andrew aka Lenard, Vera aka Ann, Nannie, John C aka Son, Ida aka Gertrude). After Lillie died about 1907-8 he married Francis Prewitt (or Pruitt) soon after and had a son Willie Coleman Montgomery about 1932.
Any help would be appreciated! I'm stuck and can't move any further.
