From the book "History of the Settlement of Upper Canada, Ontario, with Special Reference to the Bay of Quinte" by Wm. Caniff, MD. MRSCE, pub 1869. This book can be found on Google Books in its entirety.
Colonel Hanjost Herkimer or "John Joost" was a brother of the rebel general Nicholas Herkimer. Hanjost Herkimer had served as an officer in Butler's Rangers. He lived on Lot 2 in Kingston. From another source, I leared that this land had been called "Herkimer's Nose", then "Herkimer Point" and is now called "Lemoine Point" where there is a park. According to the Caniff book, on page 108, Hanjost Herkimer had a son named Nicholas who inherited that land and was killed on it. Nicholas had "married a Purdy and had several children. His end was a sad one, being murdered by a blacksmith named Rogers, who escaped. A daughter was married to Captain Sadlier, another to an officer in the Army, and a third to Mr. Wartman." This murder occurred in 1809.
Where can I find a newspaper account of this story? I'd like to learn the given name of the man, "Rogers" who committed the crime and what the circumstances were that led up to the crime.
