So here's a question - I'm not doubting the validity of Ancestry DNA, but rather, trying to figure out how something fits.
We've always been under the impression that my Great Grandfather was from Germany - the two surnames I have on that side seem German, and it's listed in all documents. However, when I got my DNA results back, there was no hint of German or Northern European - I did get Russian/Finnish (not the proper term but some of you will know what I mean), British Isles, and a very small percentage of Southern European. My theory is that the German side actually comprised of Italian immigrants, who maybe were not in Germany long eonugh for the DNA trail to register?
However, I'm not sure how accurate this theory is. Are there any other explanations? Because I also know that southeren Europe could account for Roman ancestors on the Brit side. I was just surprised that my Germanic heritage wasn't represented.
