I am looking for any descendents of a convict named James Saffin. James was born in Wiveliscombe (convict record says Woolscombe but that would have been his accent), Somerset, England. He appears to have been a thoroughly bad lot and had several run-ins with the police before being transported. In 1844 he was transported aboard the Hyderabad to Norfolk Island via Van Dieman's Land as it was then. His conduct record for that time shows his being drunk, awol etc. In 1859 he was granted a ticket of leave but this was revoked about 6 months later! And this is where it ends, I would really like to know what happended to him and where is buried (a photo of the grave would be appreciated). I am now at a dead end with this chap, I have tried Tasmanian records and sent out several other enquiries to no avail.
Thanks Susan
