I was needing some help. My mother remembers my g-grandmother saying that when her grandparents, one or both were Cherokee, settled in Iowa that they were adopted into a tribe. The family legend was that they went to visit relatives in Iowa and just stayed, which I can believe because they would have known they were destined to go to Oklahoma, anyway, on the Trail of Tears and maybe they decided to move where they wanted and not have that decision made for them.
What were the tribes in Iowa in the 1820's-1840's and would they have done this. We are trying to confirm that my g-grandmother was indeed born in Iowa and who her parents were. All we know is that they were Doc and Mary Johnson. We don't know what his real name was unless Doc was his real name or what her maiden name was unless it was Johnson. They might have been born in Iowa. My g-grandmother was Mary S. Johnson/Talley/Matthews and according to the death certificate she was born in Galloplice, Iowa yet the record of death says Gallopice, Iowa. The one thing I do know is that she was born Jan. 8, 1866 in Iowa. If anyone can come up with any ideas that might help I would certainly appreciate it. I'm sorry that the details are so sketchy but this is all we have.
