Mathias T. Wood, Atty. & Real Estate dealer of Hopewell, IL, b. 1/1/1842 @ Tremont, IL; grandfather was Ebenezer Wood (native of England, m. a German lady); father was Stephen Wood, b. L. I., NY; migrated to OH early; was in Mackinaw tnp, Tazewell Co., IL in 1833; later to Tremont tnp, Tazewell Co., IL and in 1856 to Linn Co., KS.

Mathias served in Civil War; m. Elizabeth Trout (b. VA; parents native of Germany; moved to TN when she was a girl; later to IL where she met & married Stephen Wood; she died 1889). Mathias had a brother & a sister (who died age 4). Brother was Elias; served 4 yr.. in Civil War, 26th IL Inf.; farmer @ Elmwood, Peoria Co., IL. Stephen Wood married 2nd time and had several children, incl.: Charles (farmer in Girard, KS), Henry (of Pueblo, CO), and Lewis (of MI).

Mathias joined Civil Ward in 1861; married Miss Mary Rolfson (Schoolteacher); had 4 children: Anna L. (m. Frank L. Zipf; merchant @ Hopedale), William (lawyer), Frank (age 17 in 1894) and Letta (age 11 in 1894); a daughter named Maggie died age 17.
