My immigrant ROTH ancestors, Frederick and Margaretha, lived in a small town seven miles from Waynesboro. I have been trying to locate them on the 1850 census. That census is not indexed on Heritage Quest so I'm having to browse page by page on a dial-up connection -- very tedious. :-) They're not in Washington Twp. Here are excerpts from a handwritten family history:
". . . a German settlement about 7 miles from Waynesboro in a little valley between two great mountains."
". . . sometime in November, 1843, they moved into their new home."
"They continued to live in this little valley until 1852. . ."
". . . they kept up prayer meetings from house to house. But if they wanted to hear preaching, they would pick up their babies and walk 7 miles to Waynesboro to church, and walk back and give God thanks for the day’s blessings."
From studying the topographic map online I plan to try Quincy Twp. next. It looks as if there's a little valley just east of Mont Alto that would be about seven miles from Waynesboro.
If anyone who knows the region can point me in a more likely direction (no pun intended) I would be most grateful.
Frederick became a preacher in Indiana after leaving Pennsylvania, having found that the main activity on Sundays in the German settlement there was log rolling. From this I deduce that he was probably very active in the prayer meetings in PA as well.
Thanks in advance for any help.
