I am trying to clarify where a particular relative in my wife's family tree hails from.

According to the 1920 US census, this relative (Gertrude Kammer, nee Terbach) reports being from "Essen." Her daughter (Terese, Mrs. George Denz) reports her mohter being from "Hessen."

I presume these are the same community. Is one more accurate than the other? The family is Catholic, if that make a difference. According to the census Gertrude came 1890 (although I suspect it was earlier than that, around 1884/1885).
