We noticed that my father-in-law's Danville High School report card has the notation, “INFLUENZA” marked vertically down the grading column in place of grades. This was for the third quarter portion of his report card during his high school year, 1918-1919.
Does this notation indicate closure of the high school for the third quarter as a measure to lessen the contagion of the influenza epidemic - or does that indicate the long-term absence of my husband's father due to his illness with influenza?
Does anyone else on this list have a report card from Danville High School during the same time frame for comparison? If this shows closure of the school, what other local institutions were closed?
Thanks so much for helping us to clarify this situation.
