Has anyone solved the Clothilde deValois mystery??
Like other Zeller decendants... I'm perplexed about the parents of Lady Clothilde de Valois (1660-1749)... wife of Jaques Sallaire Zeller (1660-1709) and mother of Johann Heinrich Zeller (1684-1756) who immigrated to the USA.
The internet (and Ancestry.com) is filled with claims that her parents were a Charles deValois D'Angouleme (1642-1697) and Elizabeth Hartwell (1642-1666). However, existance of this younger "Charles" isn't documented (and given the lineage, you'd think he would be).
The elder Charles deValois (natural son of Charles IX of France) is very well documented (lived 1473-1650); but there's no mention of him having a daughter Clothilde. Plus, he died in 1650 before her birth around 1660.
This well-documented elder Charles (son of the king) had a son Louis Emmanuel who had 4 children with Marie Henriette de la Guiche (1597-1682). No mention of Louis having a son Charles. However, it is documented that Louis had an illegit son Antoine Charles Louis batard de Valois who was later legitimized as "Le Chevalier d'Angouleme". I can't find the name of Antoine's mother. The records also show Antoine had 1 daughter (hmmm?), but I've not been able to find any name. Perhaps this is the mysterious Clothilde? Does anyone have any evidence of this connection?
Another lead might be through Elizabeth Hartwell? Does anyone have info on her?
Has anyone "cracked the code" on Lady Clothilde?
