I am trying to find the birthplace of my great grandfather Donald Davidson.

The earliest reference to him I can find, is when he gets married in Salford Lancashire in Feb 1867. He states on the certificate he is 38 yrs a batchelor living in Salford, his occupation is a clerk. His father (my g/g granfather) is alive and is a farmer.

He died in Farnworth Lancashire in Sept 1868, his occupation is a nurse on the lunatic ward at Fishpool workhouse. He is buried in the graveyard of St James Farnworth. He is mentioned in the workhouse minute books, the first entry being March 1867.

I cannot find him in any of the English census, but there are a number in the Scottish census. Can anybody suggest how I can find out where he came from.
