Has anyone see the pension files for JAMES WILEY HODGES?
I placed an order for them with the National Archives only to learn the VA still has the files. It will require a Freedom of Information request for me to read the files.
What I am really interested in is any information in the files concerning the first husband of Mrs. James Wiley Hodges. She was the widow of JAMES HARVEY HOOPER, a fatality on the Sultana, while James Wiley Hodges was a survivor.
Both men were in 3rd TN Cav and had been at Cahaba. Hooper had been a sergeant in Company D while Hodges had been in Company F.
James Wiley Hodges became the guardian of Hooper's only child when he married Hooper's widow. Her testimony for her widow's pension and child's pension (Hooper pension records) indicates she had worked for Hodges's mother during the war. After the death of Hodges, she again applied for a widow's pension. I figure she may have made statements about her first husband's death when she made that second application.
So, if anyone studying the Sultana survivors has seen the pension files for James Wiley Hodges, could you tell me whether it is worth my taking the time for the FOA request to the VA for his pension documents?
