My mother recently did her mt-dna at familytree. She showed one HVR1, HVR2 match, to a male. I assumed that the match must lie in his mt-dna, but I've researched his mother's mother's mother's (etc) tree, and it doesn't even come close to my mother's family.
My question is (and please forgive me for ignorance on this subject), could the match come through one of his male ancestors? Could my mother's mt-dna match to, say, his maternal great grandfather?
If the match must lie between both parties' mt-dna, then we clearly have a family mystery.
