Great information found in Levy Court Documents, Sussex Co.

Just came from Dover. Spent a lot of time there, especially researching the Levy Court records between 1820 to 1834. Levy Court, as I understand it, was made up of three commisioners, whose duties it was to raise money for the county through taxes and conduct some administrative funtions (help me here people in the know). They hired/assigned overseer's to take down real and personal tax info of each male (specifically, but not exclusively) the age of 21 or older. That include those who had no real property, because all applicable males had to pay thier 'pole/pool/poll' tax.

Some information contained in the levy court records include: 21 year olds living at home/others homes (and not listed in the census); where a new person just moved from; where a delinquent citizen moved to; when a delinquent citizen died (those with and WITHOUT a will, making it the only record of some people's death); lineage (some names have "of C" refering to his father Cornelius, or "of John" naming his father in full); yearly data, rather than 10 data like the census, giving one a chance to follow people not even recorded in the census. When court was in session, the named people they paid and services rendered, whether official buisiness or necessary tasks. Some years have as many as 4 lists to look at your ancester for a chance at pertenant data. That's because some years had
1) The overseer's record of each citizen in thier district and all the property they own that is taxable, and the value of the property.
2) A short summary of those in that district with real/personal tax value listed
3) A short summary of those listed with thier real/personal tax value and thier road tax due.
4) the Levy Court clerk's summary of all the taxable persons of all sussex with personal/real value and raod tax.

This information for me is fresh and new; if I have made an error, please feel free to expand or correct my understanding of these records.

I have photo copied much of these records between 1821 and 1833, so if you want me to look up a name, ask away.
