Olin L. Crawford

MADISON - Mr. Olin L. Crawford, 57, died Wednesday, December 2, 2009 of an unexpected illness at Eastern Maine Medical Center, Bangor, ME.

He was born in Nevada County, Arkansas to Lester Richmond and Vida Dale Anders Crawford.

He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Church of Christ and was a volunteer fire fighter in Carthage, Texas. He later worked with the Mountain River Trucking Company in Mt. Airy, and was a member of the American Legion, Post 290, in King.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Virgil Crawford.

He is survived by his wife of thirty-six years, Victoria "Vicky" Crawford; one son, Jody Dale Crawford and wife, Michelle of Madison; three brothers, Odell Crawford and wife, Minnie of Hallsville, TX, Harold Crawford and wife, Shirley and Bill Crawford and wife, Donna, all of Waskom, TX; two grandchildren, Tyler and Cheyanne Crawford; two sisters-in-law, Tammy Parker and Beverly Terrell; two brothers-in-law, Bill Parker and wife, Jane, and Reg Davenport and wife, Gail; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will have a private Memorial Service later. They will be receiving friends at home. No visitation or funeral is planned at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Legion, Post 290, P.O. Box 432, King, NC 27021. (Burroughs)

Ruth Whitaker James

MADISON - Ruth Whitaker James, 54, of 5692 NC Hwy 772, went to be with the Lord Thursday, Dec. 3, 2009, at Wesley Long Hospital.

The Funeral Service will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, December 6, 2009 at Meadows Baptist Church with the Reverend Ricky Craig officiating. Interment will follow in the Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Ruth was born November 23, 1955, in Guilford County, to the late James David Whitaker and the late Shirley John Jones.

She was a member of Meadows Baptist Church and was co-owner of Triad Stone. She was a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her step-mother, Clara Whitaker; a brother, Ronnie Whitaker; and a brother-in-law, Don Freeman.

Survivors include her husband, Joe James of the home; a son, Joey James and wife, Brandi; and a daughter, Jessica Easter and husband, Jarrett, all of Madison; brother, Richard Whitaker and wife, Nancie of Walnut Cove; sisters, Ruby Freeman of Madison, Karen Whitaker of Walnut Cove and Rachel Whitaker of Asheboro; her three grandchildren, Seth, Ty, and Emma; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m., Saturday, December 5, 2009, at Colonial Funeral Home Stokes Chapel and other times at the residence. Colonial Funeral Home Stokes Chapel in Sandy Ridge is serving the family. Condolences may be offered at www.colonialfh.net.

Robert Willis Clifton

Robert Willis Clifton, 85, of Horsepasture Price Road, Ridgeway, died Friday, Dec. 4, 2009, at his home.

He was born April 13, 1924, in Rockingham County to Willis Winston Clifton and Mary Elizabeth Kallam Clifton.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Deanna Clifton; sisters, Lula Cox, Ruth Kallam, Sallie Joyce, Amer Justice, Rachel Williams, Hazel Coleman, Geneva Clifton and infant Lillie Clifton; brothers, Bishop, Bailey, David, Paul, Samuel, Joel, Jack and Dan Clifton; and many nephews and nieces..

During World War II, he was assigned to the Corps of Engineers 238th Battalion and served in the North African and European theaters. He retired from American Furniture Co. after 40 years.
He was a member of Christian View Pentecostal Holiness Church for 55 years, where he served as Sunday school superintendent, deacon, choir member and driver of the church van.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Shirley Willard Clifton; sons, Irvin Clifton of Ridgeway and Keith Clifton of Madison, N.C.; sister, Eva Smith of Martinsville; three grandsons; and a great-granddaughter.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Christian View Pentecostal Holiness Church multi-purpose building, Stoneville, N.C., with Ministers Rick Wilkie, Delmar Scotton and Dwayne Lester officiating. Burial will be in the Martin family cemetery with military honors by the Veterans Honor Guard of Martinsville and Henry County.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the church’s multi-purpose building and at other times at the home.

Margaret Pierce Herron

EDEN — Mrs. Margaret Pierce Herron, 71, of 650 Audubon Road, passed away on Thursday, December 3, 2009, at Morehead Memorial Hospital.

There will be no formal service.

Mrs. Herron was born in Norfolk, Virginia, on September 2, 1938, a daughter of the late Elbert Leslie Pierce and Verda Greenlee Pierce. She was a retired telephone operator with C&P Telephone Company.

She is survived by her husband, James L. Herron; her sons, Perry L. Edwards Jr. and wife, Janet, of Eden, and Timothy P. Edwards and wife, Kathy, of Lenoir; her step sons, James Herron of New York and David Herron of Georgia; her mother, Verda L. Pierce; her five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. on Saturday, December 5, at Boone-Reynolds Funeral Home.

Leverne Hunt Death Notice

REIDSVILLE — Leverne "Hunt" Hunt passed away on Monday, November 30, 2009, at the age of 72.

He was originally from Lumberton, N.C., but had lived in Reidsville since 1963.

Hunt was an avid NASCAR fan and go-kart racer. He had worked for Reidsville Truck & Trailer Repair for 15 years and, before that, at Robie Lee Carter's Trucking.

A memorial will be held by his Reidsville family, who loved him dearly, from 2 until 4 p.m. on Sunday, December 6, at the Wentworth Recreation Center on Highway 87 North.
In lieu of flowers we are taking donations for his companion of 26 years, Ruby Amaya, and her son, whom Hunt had raised.

Essie Lee Johnson

EDEN — Pastor Essie Lee Johnson, 73, of 178 Pine Rd., went home to be with the Lord, November 29, 2009.

Funeral services will be held 12 noon, Saturday, December 5 at St. Thomas Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church, 633 Hwy. 150 W., Greensboro. Burial will be in Eden Gardens Cemetery in Eden.

She was a native of South Carolina, pastor of God Holy Temple #2 and was a loving mother and grandmother.

She is survived by three sons, Leroy Major of N.J., Rodney Major and Lloyd Major both of Pa., five daughters, Bernice Cowart of Conn., Deborah Parks of Calif., Victoria Major of Eden, Beverly Major and Gloria Spaulding of N.J., two brothers, Pastor Moses Davis and James Davis of Va., two sisters, Vernice Wiley of Va. and Betty Swinton of Fla., sixteen grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 12 noon Saturday at the church and other times at the residence.

Ruby Turner Johnson

EDEN — Ruby Turner Johnson, formerly of 401 South Lake Street in Eden, went to be with her Lord and Savoir on Sunday, December 6, 2009. God had blessed her with over 98 years of life and she was loved by everyone who knew her.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, December 8, in the Fair Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Doby Salmons and Reverend Mark Thompson officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Johnson was born December 22, 1910, in Spray, N.C., to the late Robert F. Turner Sr. and Annie Williams Turner.

She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Draper for more than 70 years and attended faithfully until her health declined. During those years, she was a member of the choir and Women of Worth. She provided the church with gospel tracts and handed out the "Our Daily Bread" devotional booklets. Every card she sent to those in need of thoughts and prayers always included a tract or booklet. Mrs. Johnson wrote to church missionaries on foreign fields for many years. She was always keeping the missionaries informed with "Letters from Home".
For most of her married life she was a homemaker, but in the late 1930s she worked a short while in the Fieldcrest Mills Blanket Mill. She was a member of the Draper Woman's Club for many years and loved to take her baked goods to family, friends and the home-bound.

Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Thomas Johnson; sister, Gladys Turner; brothers, Alvis, Oliver, and Russell Turner; and half-brother, Robert F. Turner Jr.

She is survived by her daughter, Ruby Ann Bousman of Eden; grandsons, Henry M. Bousman Jr. and wife, Cindy, of Kernersville, and Michael Bousman and wife, Laura, of Virginia Beach, Va.; granddaughter, Lynn B. Stone and husband, Tim, of Reidsville; great- grandsons, Jonathan Bousman, Andy Bousman, and Jason Shelton; half-sister, Lucille T. Cherry of High Point; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Special thanks goes to Arbor Ridge, Morehead Memorial Hospital, 4th Floor, and to Fran Turner, for their excellent care. Also, we want to thank Dr. Shah and the late Dr. James Austin for all of their knowledge and care

Sandra Kay Mitchell Johnson

A memorial service for Sandra Kay Mitchell Johnson, 57, of 200 Grayleaf Circle, Martinsville, who died Dec. 8, 2009, at her home, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Roselawn Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Gardner officiating.
The family will receive friends at the home on Grayleaf Circle.

She was born Sept. 19, 1952, in Leaksville, N.C., to Curtis Wesley Mitchell and Frances Lee Overby Mitchell Shreve.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Barry Barnes; and a brother, Bobby Barker.

She had been an interior decorator for Triple A Mobile Homes for 10 years, and she was a member of New Heights Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school.
She was a member of the Bassett Moose Lodge and a former member of the Martinsville Moose Lodge.

Surviving are her husband, David Johnson of the home; a son, Gary Barnes of Texas; two daughters, Gail Fallin of Martinsville and Wendy Doss of Tampa, Fla.; a brother, Ricky Mitchell of Eden, N.C.; two sisters, Deborah M. East and Debbie Turley, both of Eden; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Larry Wayne Massey

RUFFIN — Larry Wayne Massey, 60, of 11168 Park Springs Road, passed away on Thursday, December 3, 2009, at Annie Penn Hospital.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 5, at Reidsville Baptist Church with Dr. Jerry Carter officiating. The interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.

Larry was born in Rockingham County to the late Albert Lee Massey and Minnie Mae Wilson Hopkins.

He was formerly employed with Golden Belt. He was a long-time and faithful member of Reidsville Baptist Church. Larry was an avid sportsman and he especially loved golf.

Along with his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brother, Jimmy Lee Massey.

He is survived by his wife, Cathy Barker Massey, of the home; his sisters, Nancy Vincent and husband, Ron, of Reidsville, Betty Farmer and Stan Kozdrowski of Stoneville and Janet Shelton and husband, Lee, of Eden; his step brother, Johnny Hopkins and wife, Kathy, of Eden; his brothers-in-law, Steve Barker and wife, Cathy, of Reidsville and Larkin Landrum of Raleigh, N.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Timothy Jonathan Pratt

STONEVILLE — Timothy "T.J." Jonathan Pratt , 25, of 250 Smith Road, passed away at Hospice Home of Rockingham County after a courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, December 8, 2009, at Stoneville Pentecostal Holiness Church with burial to follow at Matthews Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery.

T.J. was born in Rockingham County on August 2, 1984.

He graduated from Dalton L. McMichael High School in 2002 and then joined the U.S. Marine Corps where he served his country in Afghanistan. He was employed as a Machine Operator and had worked for Sam Smith & Sons and C&C Crushing and, most recently, along with his father in the family business.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Debra Gray Pratt, and his paternal grandparents, Billy and Della Pratt.

He is survived by his father, Tim Pratt; sister, Jessica Smith and husband, Patrick; grandparents, David and Shirley Gray; son, John Riley Pratt, and the mother of his son, Georgette Tucker; and nephews, Triton and Claxton Smith, all of Stoneville.

Visitation will be held from 7 until 9 p.m. on Monday at Stoneville Pentecostal Holiness Church and other times at the home of his sister, Jessica Smith, at 112 Church Street, Stoneville.

REIDSVILLE — Sandra Kay Putnam, 65, of 2730 Ashley Loop Road, passed away Tuesday, December 1, 2009 at Hospice Home of Rockingham County.

Funeral services will be held 7 p.m. Thursday, December 3, 2009 at Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Ron Boswell officiating. Interment will be held at 11 a.m. Friday December 4, 2009 in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Putnam was born in Cleveland County, North Carolina to Jake Mode and the late Nova Weathford Mode.

Sandra was of the Baptist faith and attended Calvary Baptist Church. She loved working in her plant bed, being a Cub Scout leader and was known as the "Mom of the neighborhood." Sandra lived life to its fullest and fulfilling to her family as a devoted and caring Mom, loving her husband of 45 years, her sons and spoiling her grandchildren.

Along with her mother, she is preceded in death by her sister, Nancy Watson.

Survivors include her loving husband, Jim Putnam of the home; sons, Bryan E. Putnam of Reidsville and Joel D. Putnam of Denver, NC; grandchildren, Jacob W. Putnam and Maxwell Putnam; father, Joel D. Mode; and mother-in-law, Imogene Putnam.

EDEN — Mrs. Helen Nidy Smith, 66, of 1655 Quesinberry Road passed away early Tuesday morning, Dec. 2, 2009 at her residence.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 5 at Boone-Reynolds Funeral Home Chapel.

Mrs. Smith was born in Charleston, W.Va. on September 22, 1943, a daughter of Clyde Sennett and Alta May Frazier Nidy, both deceased.

She was retired from Stoneville Furniture Company and was a homemaker. She was a member of Tri-City Baptist Church. She was a very loving wife, mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband, Doug Smith of the home; her daughters, Jennifer Ussery, Deanna Smith, Jeannie Watson, all of Eden; her sons, Wayne Smith, Steve Smith, and Danny Smith, all of Reidsville, Jerry Beasley and Ronnie Beasley, both of Danville, Va., Jimmie Beasley of Axton, Va., Keith Smith of Mooresville; her sisters, Sue Murphy of Eden and Libby Johnston of St. Petersburg, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her son, Greg James Beasley.

Eugene Dillard Smith

GREENSBORO — Eugene Dillard Smith, 86, left this world to be with his wife Tuesday, December 8, 2009 at his home.

An 11 a.m. Graveside service will be held Saturday December 12, 2009 at Lakeview Memorial Park with Rev. Mark Norman Vickers officiating.

He was a Rockingham County Native.

Eugene was a U.S. Army World War II veteran. He retired from P. Lorillard.

In addition to his parents Eugene was preceded in death by his wife Jean B. Smith and two brothers, Lee and Henry Smith.

Eugene is survived by his daughter Deborah S. Chambers and husband, Lee of McLeansville; two grandsons, Scott Chambers and wife Cristina of Miami, FL and David Chambers of Boston, MA.

Larry Haywood Williams

REIDSVILLE — Larry Haywood Williams, 64, of 121 Bear Branch Trail, died on Thursday, December 3, 2009, at his home.

A private graveside service will be held on Sunday, December 6, at Reidlawn Cemetery.

Mr. Williams was born in Rockingham County to the late J.T. and Edith Tickle Hams.

He was a member of Rock of Ages Baptist Church. He loved gospel music and played with the Tarnished Cross group until his health prevented him from playing. Haywood played the steel guitar and the Dobro. He was an avid hunter and also loved to go fishing. He was retired from Duke Power Company.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Rick Williams and sister, Susie Engles.

He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Carolyn Keatts Williams, of the home; daughters, Deborah Williams of Marietta, Ga., Angela Williams Stratton of Reidsville, and Julie Williams Bullock of Reidsville; son, Michael Mansfield of Reidsville; grandchildren, Nichole Bass, Casey Mansfield, Kaitlyn Mansfield, and Alex Bailey; brothers, Bennis "Champ" Williams and wife, Vickie, Keith Williams, and Mark Williams and wife, Janet, all of Reidsville; sisters, Donna Johnson of Reidsville and Kim Olson and husband, Dave, of El Paso , Texas; his ex-wife, Nancy Vincent; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Stella Ellison Bailey Williams

REIDSVILLE — Stella Ellison Bailey Williams, 93, of 175 Grady Road, died Friday, December 4, 2009, at Annie Penn Hospital.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. on Monday, December 7, at Lawsonville Road Baptist Church and burial will follow in Greenview Cemetery.

A native of Rockingham County, she was a daughter of the late Ira Dallas and Sarah Jane Williams Ellison and she had lived in Reidsville all of her life.

She was a home maker and was preceded in death by her husband, Earl D. Williams; sons, Bobby L. Williams and Ron H. Williams; and by her brothers, Odell Ellison, Cecil Ellison, Verdie Ellison, John Ellison, and Biddens Ellison.

Surviving are her daughters, Peggy Hendley Lovings Wall and late husband, Avery, of Reidsville, Rosie W. Harrell and husband, Glen, of Reidsville, and Mollie Grant and her late husband, Charlie, of Yanceyville; sons, Frank B. Williams and wife, Patricia, of Reidsville, and J.D. Williams of Reidsville; grandchildren, Terry Hendly, Sara Neal, Glen Harrell Jr., Donna Mabe, Cindi Isley, David Williams, Randy Williams, Danny Grant, Charlie Mae Woods, Andy Williams, Darnise Barrower, Ricky Williams, Dale Williams, Jeanette Williams, and Bobbette Cox; 32 great-grandchildren and nine great-great- grandchildren; and loving care giver of ten years, Pat Lynn.

Mr. Wray was born in Spray (now Eden) on February 14, 1944, a son of Harry Lee Wray Sr. and Carrie McArthur Wray.

He was retired from Karastan Rug Mill. He enjoyed woodworking and making crafts.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret H. Wray of the home; his daughters, Cindy Jones, Rene Wray, Micki Hamilton and Terrie Beth Penn, all of Eden; grandchildren, Daniel, Jessie, Butch, Mandy and Jordan; and his great grandchildren, Destiny, Madison, Luke and Brent.

RALEIGH — Algie O. Ziglar, 64, of 6724 Valley Dr., went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 2009, surrounded by loving family.

Lena Elder Ellis

EDEN — Lena Elder Ellis, 80, of 150 Dallas Street, was welcomed into Heaven by her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Sunday morning, December 6, 2009. Our strong and independent mama fought the battle of myelofibrosis; she finally succumbed to acute leukemia and took her last breath at her home at 150 Dallas Street in the Draper section of Eden.

Her funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, December 9, at Hampton Heights Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Danview Cemetery.

Mrs. Ellis was born in Tennessee on October 15, 1929, daughter of the late Will and Blanche Burgess Elder.

She was a member of Hampton Heights Baptist Church where she participated in the Willing Workers and The Lord's Pantry, sang in the choir, and was a well-voiced member of her Sunday School class.

Surviving are her daughter, Jeanne E. Rumbley and husband, Braxton, of Eden; sons, Glenn Ellis and wife, Robin, of Mayfield, Mark Ellis and wife, Gina, of Eden, and Jerry Ellis and wife, Debbie, also of Eden; grandchildren, Brian Rumbley and wife, Melissa, Leah Ellis Brown and husband, Greg, Annie Fair, Laura R. Goard and husband, Greg, Carson Ellis, Hannah Ellis and fiancé, B.J. Peters, Stephanie Ellis, Sarah Ellis, Parker Ellis, and Jake Norris; great-grandchildren, Nicholas Rumbley, Tanner Brown, and Delaney Goard; sisters, Alice Buck of Jacksonville, Fla., Connie Bryant, and Jayne Goble of Taylorsville; brothers, David Elder of Hickory and Richard Elder of Taylorsville; special "daughters and sons", Deedy Ramsey, Judy White, and Micki Neal; and special companions, Lil Bit and King.

Clyde Holland Harris

REIDSVILLE — Clyde "Chubby" Holland Harris, 89, passed away Monday, December 7, 2009 at the Hospice Home of Rockingham County.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, December 10, 2009 at Wilkerson Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Martin officiating. Interment will be held at 2 p.m. following the service in Highland Burial Park in Danville, Va.

Mr. Harris was born August 20, 1920 to the late Walter Jackson and Sarah Waller Harris.

He was a member of Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church in Danville, Va. where he was a member of the Young at Heart Club and the Chapel Bible Class. Clyde served in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of WWII in the Pacific Theatre. Mr. Harris was a retiree, after 42 years of service, as superintendent of Shops with Dan River, Inc., Riverside Division. He was an honorary member of the Danville Fire Department, where he restored the Old Horse Drawn, "Little Mary" fire engine. Along with being a member of the Midway VFW, he was also an active volunteer with the New Lebanon Church Awana Youth Grand Prix.

Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Mary McClanahan Harris and seven siblings.

Survivors include his son, Dr. Mark A. Harris and wife, Teresa of Reidsville, his nieces and nephews.

There will not be a formal visitation but the family will receive friends other times at the residence of his son, 2732 Reid School Road, Reidsville, NC.

Surviving are his brother, Pete Marshall; and four sisters, Polly Bowls, Virginia Knight, Nancy Martin, and Judy Carroll.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Fannie Marshall.

DENTON - Rev. Billie Edward Lewis, age 81, of Piedmont School Road, Denton, NC died Sunday, December 13, 2009 at Mountain Vista Health Park.

A Funeral Service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 16 at High Rock Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Claudie Harrison and the Rev. Flynn Richardson. Burial will follow at Mountain View Memorial Gardens.

Rev. Lewis was born January 27, 1928 in Rockingham County to Edward Lewis and Lemma Dodson Lewis.

He was a graduate of Piedmont Bible College and a veteran of the U. S. Marine Corp. He was a former public school teacher before entering the ministry. He was serving as pastor of High Rock Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Murphy Lewis of the home; a son, Billy E. Lewis, Jr. and wife, Sandy of Denton; a daughter, Leigh Lewis Williams of Denton; and grandchildren, Chris Williams, Katie Williams, Ethan Amstutz and Ashley Amstutz.

Mildred Alverson Alcorn

Mildred Alverson Alcorn, 86, of 2481 Moorefield Bridge Road, passed away Sunday, Dec. 13, 2009, at Danville Regional Medical Center. She had been a patient at Roman Eagle Memorial Home since June 2009 because of declining health.

Born May 3, 1923, in Rockingham County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late John Preston Alverson and the late Della Evans Alverson.

She was a member of Vandola Baptist Church. She lived her early years in Pelham, N.C., and had lived most of her life in Danville. She had worked at Belk Leggetts and Dan River Mills but lived most of her life as a homemaker.

She married the late William Franklin Alcorn Sr. (Billy) on July 4, 1941. He preceded her in death Feb. 3, 1990.

She is survived by daughters, Rebecca (Becky) A. Harris and husband, Carl, of Danville, Brenda A. DeVall and husband, Donnie, of Danville; a son, William Franklin Alcorn Jr. (Franky) and wife, Luona, of Belews Creek, N.C.; two sisters, Ruby A. Slayton and husband, Wallace, of Danville, and Annie Mae A. Strader, of Reidsville, N.C.; three grandsons, Donnie DeVall Jr. and wife, Starlette, Ricky DeVall and wife, Pam, and Billy Alcorn and wife, Angela; two granddaughters, Amy Younger and husband, Steve, and her special grandaughter, Debbie DeVall; seven great-grandchildren, Amber DeVall, Trey DeVall, Hunter DeVall, Wil Alcorn, Demi Younger, Dallas Younger, and Dakotah Younger; and two step great-grandchildren, Kodie Hundley and Brittany Lyalls.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two half-brothers, Uel Alverson and Elmer Alverson; and three half-sisters, Louise A. Everett, Ellen A. Pillar and Frances A. Roach.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2009, at Wrenn- Yeatts Westover Chapel, with the Rev. Gene Booker (brother in-law) officiating. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens.

STONEVILLE — Mrs. Shirley Beatrice Shropshire Wyrick, 72, of 3235 NC 135, passed away on Sunday morning, December 13, 2009, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.

She was born in Stoneville on April 5, 1937, a daughter of William Gordon and Ruby Pearl Martin Shropshire, both deceased.

She was a retired denier operator for DuPont in Martinsville, Virginia. She was a graduate of Stoneville High School, class of 1955, and was a member of Providence Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Billy D. Wyrick, of the home; her daughter, Cindy Wyrick Watkins and husband, Davis, of Stoneville; her brothers, Bill Shropshire and wife, Jean, of Stoneville, Jerry Shropshire and wife, Gloria, of Stoneville, and Jimmy Shropshire and wife, Meryle, of Eden; her sisters, Nancy Patterson and husband, Lester, of Stoneville and Betty Merritt and husband, Barnie, of Stoneville; her sisters-in-law, Patricia Shropshire of Stoneville and Colleen Shropshire, of Eden; her grandson, William Jason Watkins of Stoneville; 16 nieces and nephews; 24 grandnieces and nephews; and eight great- grandnieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Louise Patterson, and her brothers, Jack Shropshire and Bob Shropshire.

Elizabeth Wilson Amos

EDEN - Mrs. Elizabeth Wilson Amos, 101, died Monday, December 14, 2009, at her home on Hamilton Street, the same street where she was born in 1908.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, December 16, at The Church of the Epiphany. The family will receive friends beginning at 1 p.m. at the church. Following the funeral, the family will proceed to the burial at Lawson Cemetery.

Elizabeth was the second of five children born to the late Annie Saunders Wilson and William Basley "Bud" Wilson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Amos, and three brothers, Lawrence "Dick" Wilson; Thomas Wilson and his wife, Mildred; and Warren Wilson and his wife, Louise.

She is survived by one brother, Edwin Wilson of Winston-Salem and his wife, Emily, and a sister-in-law, June Myers of Asheville.

Elizabeth was the salutatorian of the Leaksville High School class of 1926. She attended Woman's College, now UNC Greensboro, where she earned a teaching degree. She taught first grade at Leaksville Graded School until she retired at the age of 40. She fondly remembered her students, many of whom remain in the area. Elizabeth married Bill Amos in 1936. They soon bought a house on Hamilton Street, where Elizabeth lived for the past 60 years. Elizabeth was a founding member of the Eden Thursday Study Club. She also was in a bridge club and played regularly until she was in her 90s. Elizabeth sang in the choir at The Church of the Epiphany for over 40 years. She was well known at church for her caramel cake.

Elizabeth is survived by the following nieces and nephews: Lawrence Wilson, Jr., of Hot Springs Village, Ark.; David Wilson of Winston-Salem; June Hundley of Spencer; Barbara Wilson of Columbia, S.C.; Thomas Wilson of Mountain View, Calif.; Betsy Wilson of Lansing, Mich., Stephen Wilson of Libertyville, Ill.; Bruce Wilson of North Augusta, S.C.; Ed Wilson, Jr., of Eden; Sally Wilson of Durham; and Julie Wilson of Asheville.

George M Slayton Sr

Dr. George M. Slayton, Sr., former Pastor of McAllen's Calvary Baptist Church and Coggin Avenue Baptist Church in Brownwood, Texas, was called Home to be with our Lord after a long battle with Supra Nuclear Palsy on Wednesday December 9, 2009 at the age of 85 in his home in McAllen, TX.

Dr. Slayton was born January 2, 1924 in Ruffin, North Carolina. He married Marion Frances Buckner on October 17,1942 in Draper, N.C.

Dr. Slayton served in the Army Air Force from 1943 to 1946 as an Airplane Hydraulic Mechanic and received the American Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and World War II Victory Medal, before receiving an Honorable Discharge. He then began his studies for the ministry. In 1947 he was ordained to the ministry by the Draper Baptist Church, Draper, N.C. He held a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Carson-Newman College, Tenn., and a Bachelor's Degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth. In 1967 Howard Payne College of Brownwood conferred upon him an honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree. He was a former member of the Board of Trustees at Howard Payne.
He served churches in Tennessee, Virginia, Oklahoma, and Texas while a student, and after graduation was pastor of Trinity Church in Henderson, TX; First Baptist Church, New Braunfels, TX; and the University Baptist Church, Carbondale, III. In 1959 he was called by the Indiana Baptist State Convention to serve as State Missions Secretary. He served in this capacity until 1961 when he was called to serve as Pastor of Coggin Avenue Baptist Church in Brownwood, TX. In 1968 he moved his family to McAllen, TX after he felt the Lord leading him to become the Pastor at Calvary Baptist Church. His tenure there continued for 20 years, until 1988. After serving 40 years in the ministry, Dr. Slayton retired but has continued as Pastor Emeritus of Calvary Baptist for many years.
The educational building at Calvary was formally renamed the George Slayton Education Building in 2000 in honor of his many dedicated years of service. During his life Dr. Slayton served on numerous committees and boards including: President of the McAllen Ministerial Alliance, Chairman of the State Missions Commission, Valley Baptist Hospital Board and member of the Executive Board of the Baptist General Convention of Texas.

He is survived by three children and their spouses: son, Marshall and wife Elaine of Richland Springs, TX; daughter, Rebecca Willey and husband RC of Blanket, TX; and daughter, Pamela Thompson and husband Richard of Mission, TX. He is survived by four grandchildren: Dana Bourke and husband Tim of Burnet, TX; Chris Freeland and wife Connie of Brownwood, TX; Kimberly Freeland of Dallas, TX; and Clay Thompson of Mission, TX. He is also survived by seven great-grandchildren: Tyler and Ally Bourke; Christopher, Corbin, Caleb, and Connor Freeland, and Gianluca Alan Pedroso; two sisters: Barbara Ledford and husband Bob of Alabama, and' Annette Pruett and husband David of Virginia, two brothers: Jessie O. Slayton and wife Elaine of Alabama, Buddy Slayton and wife Carol of Eden, NC, and a host of friends.

Dr. Slayton was preceded in death by Marion, his precious wife and loving co-laborer for 60 years, his sister Pauline, and his parents.

STONEVILLE — Wiley Lee Southern of 150 Ridgecrest Drive died Sunday, December 13, 2009.

He was a native of Rocky Mount and a resident of Brooklyn, N.Y. for many years before relocating to Rockingham County. Mr. Southern was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during World War II and was a retiree of Fusco Construction Company, Brooklyn, N.Y. While residing in Stoneville, he was a former employee of Home Savings Bank and the Office of Dr. Lee Turner. Spiritually, he was a faithful member of Little Bethlehem Christian Church where he served with the Board of Deacons, Senior Choir and Male Chorus.

Survivors are: beloved daughter, Dorothy Roberts of the home; granddaughters, Tonya Stephens and spouse, Bishop Jerome Stephens of Atlanta, Ga. and Monique Roberts of Long Island, N.Y.; great-grandchildren, Nichole (Max), Khalidah, Jerome, Jr. (Andrina) and Maurice; great-great-grandchildren, Joseph, Tonjane, Max, Jr., Katiana, Sydnee, Aminah and Akira; other relatives and many cherished friends.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday from the Little Bethlehem Christian Church, Eden with Pastor Larry Ponds and Bishop Jerome Stephens presiding. Interment will follow in the family of plot of Roselawn Memorial Gardens.

Sue Crews Strong

STONEVILLE — Sue Crews Strong, 91, of 3152 Settle Bridge Road, passed away early Wednesday morning, December 16, 2009 at Hospice Home of Rockingham County in Wentworth.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, December 18, at Woodbine Baptist Church on Highway 135 in Mayodan. Burial will follow in Ridgeview Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Strong was born June 9, 1918 in Orange County, the daughter of Marvin Staple and Annie Webster Crews.

She was a member of Woodbine Baptist Church and a retiree of Karastan Service Center.

Surviving is her daughter, Donna Carter and husband, Norman of Stoneville; granddaughter, Gwynne Kallam and husband, Mark of Stoneville; and two great-grandchildren, Richard and Houston Kallam.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, George D. Strong and grandson, Richard Carter.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening, 6 - 8 p.m. at Fair Funeral Home and again one hour prior to the service (1 - 2 p.m.) at Woodbine Baptist Church and other times at the home of her daughter, 3140 Settle Bridge Road in Stoneville.

MADISON - Mrs. Katherine Joyce Brown, age 90, of 3094 US Hwy. 311, died Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at Walnut Cove Health Care and Rehabilitation Center.

A Graveside Service will be held at 11 a.m., today, Friday, December 18, 2009 at Grace Baptist Church Cemetery with the Reverend Robert Plummer, Jr. and the Reverend Randy Jessup officiating.

Mrs. Brown was born in Stokes County on January 19, 1919, to the late Welborn Hassell Joyce and Nellie Shaffer Joyce.

She was retired from Gem Dandy and a member of Grace Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clayton Brown; brothers, Odell Joyce, Reuben Joyce, Roscoe Joyce; sister, Josephine Blackard; and son-in-law, Carson Hazlip, Jr.

She is survived by her daughter, Kathy Hazlip Wall (Bill); grandchildren, Jason and Tyler Hazlip, all of Madison; brother, Bobby Joyce (Hazel) of Eden; step-grandson, William Wall (Lori) of Greensboro; and special young ladies, Briana Hand and Lindsay Martin, fianc‚es of her grandsons.

REIDSVILLE — Claude Land, of 137 Person Cemetery Rd. went to be with the Lord Wednesday December 16, 2009 at Wesley Long Community Hospital.

A native of Rockingham County, he was a son of the late Jesse J. and Ellen Rice Land and had lived in Reidsville most of his life. A retired employee of American Tobacco Co. with 40 years of service, he was preceded in death by three brothers: Woodrow Land, Douglas Land, Roy Land and a sister Mildred Paschal.

Errol Wesley Navey

EDEN — Mr. Errol Wesley Navey, 80, formerly of 1230 Fieldcrest Road, passed away early on Wednesday evening, December 16, 2009 at Britthaven of Madison.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 19, 2009 at Boone-Reynolds Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Dan View Cemetery.

Mr. Navey was born in Draper, now Eden, on June 16, 1929, a son of Thomas Baxter and Clara Hundley Navey, both deceased.

He was retired as a sales associate in the men's department with Thalhimer's Department Store.

He is survived by his sisters, Corinne McBride of Eden and Anne Clark of Danville, VA., along with a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, Pauline Reynolds, Faye Webb, Lavata Chatham, Clyde Navey, and Dewey Navey.

The family will receive friends from 10 until 11a.m. on Saturday morning at Boone-Reynolds Funeral Home immediately prior to the service. At other times, respects may be paid to the family at the home of his sister, Corinne McBride, 508 Ford Street in Eden.

Virginia Gail Barker Hinton

Virginia Gail Barker Hinton, age 57, formerly of 3377 Huntington Trail, Cascade, VA, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Thursday, December 17, at 8:50 p.m. in the Piney Forest Health Care Center. She had been in declining health for the past four months and a resident at Piney Forest Health Care for two months.

Born January 13, 1952 in Eden, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Jack Barker and Lillie Easter Gauldin Barker.

Most of her life was lived in Danville where she was employed as a weaver at Dan River Mills for twenty-five years.

She was married to Charles Ray Hinton who predeceased her.

Mrs. Hinton was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include three daughters: Toni Sandridge and her husband William of Pelham, NC, Tina Wilson and her husband Michael of Danville, Patricia Vance and her husband Curtis of Kernersville, NC; four sisters: Mrs. Becky Dunlap of Reidsville, NC, Mrs. Nancy Tussey of Trinity, NC, Ms. Ruth Barker of Michigan, and Mrs. Brenda Land of Stoneville, NC; two brothers: Wayne Barker of Eden, NC and William Barker of Madison, NC; five grandchildren; a special friend: Mark Manuel of Cascade.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by one sister, Mrs. Dorothy Bibee, and by one brother, Jack Barker, Jr.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday, December 21, 2009 at two o'clock from the Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Greg Palmer and the Rev. Matthew Pacifico. Interment will follow in Schoolfield Cemetery.

MADISON — Mrs. Virginia Allen Easter, age 91, of 6880 NC 704, died Tuesday, December 15, 2009 in Roebuck, SC at the home of her daughter.

Mrs. Easter was born in Rockingham County on December 31, 1917 to the late Oscar Allen and Ida Terrell Allen.

She was a graduate of Stoneville High School. She and her husband were the retired owners of Madison Restaurant, Sealtest Dairy Bar and Star Curb Market.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Raleigh Easter and sister, Elizabeth Ann Allen.

She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Shinn of Roebuck, SC; sisters, Margaret Dalton and Pauline Richardson of Mayodan; grandchildren, Kristin Shinn Faulkner (Travis) of Spartanburg, SC and Bo Shinn of Charlotte; great-grandchildren, Raleigh and Kalli Faulkner and son-in-law, Terry Shinn.

Banks Augustus Fox

REIDSVILLE — Banks Augustus Fox, 91, of 117 Cherokee Camp Road, passed peacefully from this world on Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at his home.

The funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Monday, December 21, 2009, at Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Chip Harrell and Rev. Wayne Mayberry officiating. Interment will be held at 2 p.m. in Conover Cemetery in Conover, NC with Military rites.

Mr. Fox was born January 28, 1918 in Catawba County to the late Lee Roy and Hattie Travis Fox.

He started his journey with his loving wife October 7, 1945, and together they nurtured one of their many accomplishments, owning and operating "Mom's Country Kitchen". A devoted father, grandfather and a charter member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Reidsville, Banks was known to put people before himself. Along with being a man of faith and loving the Bible, he was a 32nd degree Mason of Catawba County.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rachel Hines Fox and daughter, Linda Fox.

Banks is survived by his sons, David Fox and wife Nancy of Raleigh, Steven E. Fox and wife, Kathi of Reidsville, Mike A. Fox and wife, Laddawan of Myrtle Beach, Ronnie Trent and wife Maggie of Eden and Timmy Booth of Reidsville; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brothers, George Fox and wife Carol of Indiana and Max Fox of Conover, NC and sister, Lorena Stiles of Falls Church, VA..

REIDSVILLE — Hilda Doss Loye, 85, of 120 Loye Drive, died on Thursday, December 17, 2009 at Annie Penn Hospital.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m., Sunday, December 20, 2009, at Wilkerson Funeral Home with Elder H. P. "Polo" Somers officiating. Interment will follow in Reidlawn Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Brian Loye, D.J. Loye, Billy Hundley, Michael McFadden, Teddy Denny and Tony Doss.

Mrs. Loye, a native of Rockingham County, was born to the late Tony B. and Zula Holly Doss.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Elsie Stanley, Betsy Previti, and Olivia Hutchens, as well as her brothers, J.T. Doss and Paul Doss.

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and was a faithful homemaker. She loved cooking and working side by side with her husband on the farm. Mrs. Loye enjoyed working and selling her vegetables at the farmers market.

She is survived by her husband of over 69 years, Coolidge Loye of the home; her sons, Tony Loye and wife, Ann, Dennis Loye and wife, Arlene, Gary Loye and wife, LuAnne; her daughter, Zula Loye Trent; grandchildren, Tonya Worley and husband, Paul, Heather McFadden and husband, Michael, Brian Loye and wife, Stacey, Stephanie Loye, Jessica Belcher and husband, Jason, D.J. Loye, Billy Hundley and wife, Patricia, Denise Chaney and husband, Billy, Hilda May Vestal and husband, Bobby; 9 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.

Elva Helen Brownlee

REIDSVILLE — Elva Helen Brownlee, 86, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, October 13, 2009.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, December 22, at Community Baptist Church.

Mrs. Brownlee was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on November 17, 1922, to the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Hill Brownlee.

She attended Philadelphia Biblical University and later graduated from Columbia International University in Columbia, South Carolina. Elva earned a master's degree from Wheaton College then served on the faculty of Columbia International. For most of her life she taught elementary school in various Christian schools in North Carolina. Elva had great musical gifts in voice and piano. She used her talent to bring blessing and enjoyment to many.

Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her sister, Elaine Brownlee Harding, of Matthews, North Carolina.

Elva is survived by brother-in-law, William T. Harding III of Charlotte; and nephews, Bill, Joe, Don, and David Harding, and one niece, Gwen Smith.

George Melvin Finney

RUFFIN — George Melvin Finney, 71, of 107 Megan Lane, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 19, 2009, at Annie Penn Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, December 22, at Burton Memorial Baptist Church with Michael Finney and Pastor James Hodges officiating. The burial will follow in Happy Home Congregational Christian Church Cemetery.

Mr. Finney was born in Rockingham County to the late Fletcher Jackson and Elizabeth Grubbs Finney.

He was employed with Southern Life Insurance Company and made Leaders Council every year. He was an avid sports enthusiast and especially enjoyed NASCAR. He always loved motorcycles and enjoyed riding them. Mr. Finney was always teaching and willing to give his advice to his family and friends. He came to know the Lord during his long battle with ALS, Lou Gehrig's Disease.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Jean Eanes Finney, and his brother, Dillard Finney.

Mr. Finney is survived by his children, George Finney Jr. and wife, Rhonda, and their daughter, Megan; Michael Finney and his children, Mike, Matthew, and Mie Jean Finney; Barbara Adams and husband, Steve, and her children, Chase and Nikki Nappier and her step daughter, Jami Adams, all of Rockingham County. He is also survived by his brother, Wayne Finney and wife, Joanne, of Ruffin; his sisters, Shirley Curry and husband, Pete, of Greensboro and Betsy Warren and husband, Johnny, of Ruffin; sister-in- law, Betty Finney of Eden; extended family, Gina Griffin and husband, Billy, of Eden and numerous nieces and nephews.
