Charles Gunderson (born in Norway ca 1840) fought in the U.S. Civil War (1860 - 1863). His pension papers said he had resided in "Cairo Station" (Carey Station, McHenry County, Illinois) for six months after discharge (where he worked on a farm) and then went to the Marine Hospital in Chicago. After a couple of years, he went to work (on Lake Michigan) on board the schooner "I.L. Shank" as a "master sailor."
