David Averill was a teacher in Tuscola County, Michigan, in 1860, according to the family history "The Averell - Averill - Avery Family" by Clara A Avery. He enlisted in Co D, 23 Michigan Infantry, as First Sergeant, 11 Aug 1862, at Tuscola, and killed in action in 1864 according to lists of Michigan Volunteers.
