Hello to the Ontario Cameron researchers out there
as a follow-up to Price's email about two Donald Camerons settling in Finch close to each other in both space and time, I am posting a correction to some long-held ideas about Angus Cameron, UEL and his son Donald.
In the UEL claims, Angus describes being a tenant farmer on Sir John Johnson's land in the Mohawk River Valley of New York before coming to Ontario. His son, Donald, also made a claim as to having lost some cattle. Angus shows up in McNiff's map of 1789 as being on lot 43 of the 1st concession north of the Raisin River in Charlottenburgh.
The only Donald showing up in Lancaster, Charlottenburgh, or Cornwall to have gotten land as a UEL was Donald, sometimes called Daniel, of lot 16 in the 5th concession of Cornwall.
Mr Lemon made the reasonable assumption that Donald Daniel of 5/16 was the Donald who was identifed as the son of Angus.
There are two problems with this assumption.
The first is that Donald Daniel's son Charles in his petition for land No 43 says that not only is he the son of Donald Daniel of Cornwall, but that Donald Daniel is the son of JOHN.
The second problem is that Charlottenburgh was by and large settled by Catholics and Cornwall by Presbyterians. While there was cross-over between families (ie. John Cameron and Nancy Grant of Charlottenburgh), all of the records for Donald Daniel's family are found in Presbyterian churches.
There are no other records of Angus that I have been able to unearth.
So, the question now becomes WHICH John Cameron was Donald Daniel the son of. One of the original UEL lists indicates that Donald Daniel is the son of John Cameron of the KRRNY. This narrows it down.
Based on DNA tests, Donald Daniel is NOT related to John Cameron of Clunes. This leaves:
--John Cameron of Strathspey who settled at lot 30 in the 1st conc of Lancaster--except his family is very well documented and they already had a son Daniel with a well-established lineage.
--John Cameron "the wise" of lot 17 1st conc Charlottenburgh who did have a son named Donald, but he was called Donald Gooney Cameron.
--or one of two John Camerons who lived in Kortright Patent and not in Johnstown before the war. One of these was called the "man who died so many times" by RCM Grant in his "Story of Martintown."
If anyone else is interested in helping disentangle these folks, please drop a note here.
Thanks
