Hello, In doing some research for an elderly friend for her entertainment, I have been looking into her Hungarian grandparents (2 couples) who immigrated to the U.S. as young adults. I have had no problem locating the U.S. records but I have one couple (friend's maternal grandparents) who traveled separately from Hamburg to NY; the husband in Dec. 1902-Jan. 1903 and the wife and their young son in Sep. 1903. I have the departure and arrival records and, perhaps, could post them here? There is some information on the place of origin(s) but, given the sloppy handwriting and the fact that Austro-Hungary and modern Hungarian place names don't always have correlate spellings (or names) and I am unfamiliar with the same, I was looking for help with the transcription of them. The family was a Wendel Szabo who was on the Moltke left 27 Dec.1903 arrived 7Jan 1903 and later his wife Julia (Kovacs) Szabo and their son Janos who were on the Pennsylvania left 12 Sep 1903 and arrived 23 Sep 1903. I think one of Wendel' Szabo's records has "Halasz" as origin point but not sure. I have another mystery too concerning friend's paternal grandparents from a death certificate where the surname (from various records) is Mitch/Mich/Mics and only origin reference I've found is listed as "Vaspremi Magyr. Hungary" which I wondered if that meant Veszprem and whether the 'Magyr.' was referring to Hungary or to Magyarpolany in Vesprem. The mother's surname of the Mitch fellow was Meyer(s). His wife's surname was Mika and they were married before they immigrated which was abt. 1900. Any help with either origins "mystery" would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for considering my questions.
