Surnames: Hoyt or Holt
I am seeking information about my g.grandfather who was born in Ireland about 1813.
Very little is known of him but I believe he was from Naas, Ireland. His name I believe was John Holt or Hoyt( or the irish spelling of that name). The reason we don't know his true name is that he jumped ship when he was near Shelburne Co., Nova Scotia, Canada, and became a deserter. He then changed his name to John Brown and lived in Upper Port La Tour, which is near Shelburne. He married Catherine Snow in N.S. and they had 5 children..Willliam.Andrew, John, Josiah, & Abigail..Family story is that he would have had to be involved in some fighting and didn't want to kill. Any clues at all would be so welcome. Wondering if there is still a list of deserters in Ireland--possibly the Police Gazette.
