Corononer Certificate Question

I have a relative buried in a family plot who I am trying to find out more about. Her name is Ann Cavanagh. Cavanagh is the maiden name of my third great-grandmother who is also buried in this plot with other family members and there is a possibility that she is my fourth great-grandmother. She died in 1882 at the age of 60 in NYC. When I searched for her death record I found a coroners certificate. Cause of death was determined to be cerebral apoplexy (I assume that is stroke) on the 31 of January. Time till death is written as "8 or 10 hours". She was a widow, born in Ireland, occupation "vegetables", a resident of the city for 31 yrs. According to the certificate her body was found at 156 Reade Street. My question is what circumstances would have had to occur for their to be a coroner's inquest? Would it have been because she was found dead, presumably died with no witnesses?
