I did the Ancestry DNA test and was matched up with a guy who was predicted to be my second cousin, with a possible range of up to third cousin. Since my mom was adopted, I had her take the DNA test too to see if this guy was also a match for her. Well, he is, with a predicted relationship of first to second cousin.
We know that my mom had at least three older biological half-siblings through her biological mother. I believe the connection is through the birth mother because this guy is from the same place as the birth mother. Also, considering the age of this guy's parents, it would match up perfectly for one of his parents to be my mother's oldest half-sibling.
So, I guess my question is this ... if this guy is a son of my mother's half-sibling, could that produce results suggesting a 1st to 2nd cousin relationship? Should it produce a closer relation or a more distant one? I'm just not entirely sure what to make of these results. Yes, it would fit for one of his parents to be my mom's half-sibling, but I don't want to get all excited over something I can't yet prove.
By the way, I did send the guy a quick message about three weeks ago. This was before we received my mom's results that confirmed the connection was on her side. All I told him in that message was that he and I are apparently second cousins, and I would love to see if we could figure out where we connect. He has yet to reply.
Thanks.
