For the last couple of years I have been researching the life and on-duty death of Police Officer Fred Kuncl (1893-1920) of the Berwyn, Illinois (a Chicago suburb) Police Department.
Officer Kuncl was the first police officer from the Berwyn P.D. to die in the line of duty. He was shot on 26 April 1920 and died the following day.
I have accomplished my original purpose which a was to ascertain the circumstances surrounding Officer Kuncl's death and have also been quite successful in documenting his life and family as well as the life and family of the individual who shot him.
I still have one loose end to his story, however, which continues to elude me and no matter what I try, I run into a brickwall....
At the time of his death Officer Kuncl was married. Various sources name his wife/widow as "May" or "May Kuncl". The 1920 census (taken 3 months before his death) show May to be 24 years old, born in Illinois, occupation: seamstress. It appears that Fred and May were married 2 years at the time of the census although his WWI draft registration shows him married in 1917.
I would love to be able to be able to find something on May to see what the young widow did following Fred's death. Without knowing her maiden name, date (or even location) of their marriage, I just can't come up with anything on her. One would have to assume that she probably remarried at some point in time following Fred's death, but, of course, I would have no idea of her new married name either.
If anyone has any ideas on how I might pursue this, I'd sure love hearing from you.
