I am trying to find out about a possible Indian connection on my g grandmother's side. She was Carlecia Chapman b1874 around Elton LA. Her parents were Joseph Chapman and Emelia Saucier. We had always been told she was Indian --- and she chanted like the Indians do when she was dying. I have old baskets of hers that supposedly have a connection with her Indian heritage. I have the Chapman line traced back and the Saucier's.
What I would like to find out is which tribes were around Elton at the time, and how do I go about researching this? I have the names and dates but can find nothing to indicate Indian ancestry.
Any help would be appreciated. I keep reading about different tribes -- some say Blackfoot, some Cherokee ...
