How do i research old company's from 1890's? I am looking for Bristol, F Thomas and Co.

My great grandfather was more or less abandoned at a young age. He was left with a family from about 4/6 weeks old. His mother said that my GGFather's father worked in Bristol, F Thomas and Co. I am unable to find this company online so was hoping someone could offer advice on where to search for company's.
