I am attempting to determine the dates of death for my ggg-grandparents, James A. Smith (b. abt 1825, Ohio) and Sarah Jane Smith (nee, Prouty, b. abt 1838, Missouri), and have exhausted all sources that I can think of. I'm guessing that I have met an unsolvable dead end but was just wondering if anyone had a suggestion I haven't thought of.
They both died sometime during the 1880s or 1890s when records are scarce. The death location is almost certainly Whitman county, probably near Farmington. They arrived in Washington from Oregon between 1870 and 1873. They are found in the 1880 census in Farmington. Sarah Jane Smith apparently died "at a young age." She was about 43 at the time of the birth of her last child born in 1881. I would presume this means she died in her mid-40s, ie., about the mid-1880s. James A. Smith does not appear in the 1900 census so I conclude that he died sometime in the 1890s.
Thus far I have:
1. Traced eight of their twelve children without result.
2. Examined the Washington State digital archives without result.
3. Searched Find-a-Grave without result.
4. Looked at various online cemetery records for Whitman county without conclusive results.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
