My 3rd great grandfather was Samuel Carty, born Oct. 20, 1828; died Sept. 10, 1881. I believe his last name at birth was McCarty as there are no Carty's on the Census prior to 1850. Ironically the person taking the census for that area was Justus Carty who was actually Justus McCarty, his tombstone even says McCarty. The only McCarty on the 1840 census who would have had a child who was Samuel's age was a Peter McCarty. I can't find much on him yet. When Samuel signed up for the Civil War he signed up the same day as a Jacob Carty, I wonder if they were brothers? There is also a William Carty who moved to Phillipsburg, NJ.
