My grandfather's mother called herself Lugenia Blanton. She first appears in history in Cross Creek, NC in 1900 census living as a 17 yr old boarder, single, one newborn living child (my grandfather.) It is unknown whether she was ever married to a "Blanton" or whether as a unwed mother adopted her surname for the child. Some written records (grandfather's marriage certificate) say my grandfather's father's name was John Blanton. No proof of this is available. Since the 1890 census' were destroyed by fire, Lugenia's life status cannot be found. Lugenia eventually "married" or lived with John W Maultsby, also of Cross Creek, NC. Her death certificate says Lugenia Maultsby.
