I been working on researching the GUSTIN and SOPER families for several years now. I'm posting a very minimal outline of what I've learned in hopes of making connections with any other GUSTIN and SOPER family researchers who are researching this line. I have done the following research:
• I have read through and copied the relevant pages from _The Gustine Comendium_ on the famiy of Benajah Gustin (page 233).
• I have obtained his daughter, Elizabeth's death certificate.
• I have located Elizabeth and her husband, James Soper in the 1860 census of Union Township, Tioga Co., Pennsylvania.
• I have obtained copies of Elizabeth's and James' wills.
• I have located Elizabeth and James in the 1880 census of Highlands, Macon, North Carolina.
• I have read through Don Sopers _The New Soper Compendium_ 1989.
My research has resulted in quite a few corrections and additions to this information. I have collected several documents the following is a partical list of the documents for the family of James and Elizabeth:
1. 1860 Census
2. 1880 Census
3. Transcription of marriage annoucement of the marriage of James and Elizabeth in the Ward Township, Tioga County newspaper.
4. Elizabeth's will.
5. Jame's will.
6. Copies of the pages of _The Gustine Compendium_ that refer to this family.
7. The application for a pension for James Soper, veteran of the Civil War.
8. Declaration of pension for James Soper.
9. Elizabeth's death certificate.
I have found the following information on the family in general but have not yet begun to verify it with vital records or census data:
Benajah Gustin. Born on June 2, 1801 in Wantage, Sussex Co., NJ. Benajah died on August 29, 1876; he was 75. On July 20, 1837 when Benajah was 36, he married Margaret Snover, in Bradford Co., PA. Born about 1805 in NY. They had the following children:
1. i. Elizabeth (1838-) Born on July 3, 1838 in Bradford Co., PA. Married about 1860 in Ward TWP, Tioga, PA. About 1860 when Elizabeth was 21, she married James Soper, son of David M. Soper & Sarah M. Unknown, in Ward TWP, Tioga, PA. Born in 1836 in Union, Tioga Co., PA. James died in 1911; he was 75. They had the following children:
i. William. Born 1860.
ii. John J. Born 1862.
iii. Rosa. Born 1864.
iv. Sarah. Born 1867 in TIOGA, PA.
v. Clinton E. Born 1871.
vi. Emily. Born 1873 in TIOGA, PA.
vii. David. Born 1878 in Macon Co., North Carolina.
2. ii. Sarah Jane. Born 1840 in Bradford Co., PA. Sarah Jane married Richard Howland.
3. iii. Catharine. Born on December 14, 1842. Catharine married P. Swaney.
4. iv. John Anning. Born on May 21, 1845 in Bradford Co., PA. John Anning died in Ft.Johnson, PA on February 11, 1865; he was 19.
5. v. Marcella. Born on April 9, 1848 in Bradford Co., PA.
6. 3 vi. Mary E. (1850-1876) Born on December 21, 1850 in Bradford Co., PA. Mary E. died on July 25, 1876; she was 25. Mary E. married Levi Kniffen. Born about 1846.
