Lawrence L. SPENCLEY, 83, of Center Township, died Nov. 7, 1992, at his home.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, at the Calvary Baptist Church in Brutus. Pastor Norman OLSON and the Rev. Andrew BROWN will officiate. Interment will be in Bliss Township Cemetery.

He was born Nov. 17, 1908, in Bliss Township, the son of William and Madeline (McCUMBY) SPENCLEY. He attended Bliss School.

He went to work at the age of 12 with his father and a horse team in the woods. At the age of 14, he had his own team in the DeTour area and worked for 20 years for Connie DENNISON Construction Co. at the Spring Bay Docks.

He married Lavina STARK on July 5, 1931, in Emmet County, and they made their home in the Pellston area. She died Dec. 4, 1969.

Mr. Spencley also worked from 1932-33 at the FISHER farm in Emmet County, and had worked on the WPA project constructing the Emmet County Airport.

For 25 years, Mr. Spencley worked for Burt PUTMAN doing road construction work. He worked for the Petosky Tanning and Extract Co. for 11 years. He also worked for HODGKISS and DOUMAN as a foreman on a road construction crew. Mr. Spencley retired in the 1970s.

He married Helen BRUGER on Nov. 5, 1973, in Center Township.

He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and the laborers union. He was a former member of the Ely Grange and the Emmet Farm Bureau.

Survivors include his wife, Helen; four daughters, Mrs. Leta COX of Jackson, Mrs. Thomas (Lois) FORD of Pellston, Mrs. James (Lorraine) MANGUM of Maryland and Mrs. Jack (Leola) GROBASKI of Pellston; three sons and daughters-in-law, Lloyd SPENCLEY of Defiance, Ohio, Walter and Melinda SPENCLEY of Brutus, and Garth and Mabel SPENCLEY of Brutus; 27 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, William Fred SPENCLEY of Cadmus, Mich.

Mr. Spencley was preceded in death by 14 brothers and sisters, and two grandsons, Roger Dale SPENCLEY and David Lawrence SPENCLEY.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Lawrence Spencley Memorial Building Fund of the Calvary Baptist Church. Envelopes for memorial contributions are available at the Schiller Funeral Chapel in Pellston where friends may call 5-9 p.m. today, Nov. 9.
