My gr,gr,grandfather, Abida Smith came to Clarendon @ 1870 and brought his 3 children; George Philo Smith, Harriett Smith (who married John Keep) and Mary Elisabeth Smith (who married Timothy Edward Blashfield). I am trying to find out if any of my relatives owned land in or around Clarendon or what house they lived in. Can anyone help me? Thank you for your time.

The index to the 1873 Plat Map Atlas of Calhoun County shows
a "Smith, G P" owning land in sections 8 and 17 of Clarendon
County. Willard Library has the Atlas on which the landowners are clearly shown.

George, thank you so much for this information. I just received the Plat book of Calhoun County yesterday and have had a hard time reading it but now I'll know just where to look. I'm still trying to find out exactly when Abida moved to Clarendon. He shows up on the 1870 Clarendon census and in 1860 he was in Vt.

I should think you would need the image from the actual 1873
Plat Atlas showing property demarcations to make any sense on a modern map of where they were.

Send your mailing address to my library email address and I will copy the image for you.
