I am compiling a history of my branch of the Maxson family of Westerly & Hopkinton, and, while I have the genealogical basics, there is a real gap on biographical and historical information on ancestors between Rev. John Maxson (d.1747) and John Maxson (b. 1808). Anyone out there have data on Rev. John 2nd generation, John (b.1701) 3rd, Matthew (d.1791) 4th, George (b. 1756) 5th or George Leroy Maxson (b. 1778) 6th? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Peter Maxson

Hi, Peter!

Do I take it the John MAXSON you mention who was born 1808 was a son of George Leroy MAXSON? And your ancestor? If so we are distant cousins, as I am (through my mother) a descendant of George Leroy's son Nathan.

I, like you, don't know much about Rev. John. However, since he was a Seventh-day Baptist minister, wouldn't the SDB Center in Janesville, Wisconsin likely have some biographical/historical information on him?

The only thing I know about Matthew is the DAR recognizes him as a Patriot because he signed the Test Act.

Matthew's (ten years) younger sister, Thankful, married Nathan BARBER. He was a militia Captain and a member of the Rhode Island colonial legislature. Their daughter Eleanor married her first cousin once removed, George Leroy MAXSON. His father, George, was a Lieutenant in the militia and, according to the DAR's records, lived EXACTLY forty years. To the day!

The younger George, Eleanor, and George's younger brothers moved from Rhode Island to Lebanon in Madison County, New York around the turn of the nineteenth century. Around 1826 George and Eleanor and their family moved on to Richburg in Allegany County, New York. (Some of the by-then married brothers may have come along, as well...I'm not sure.) Eleanor died and was buried in Richburg in 1852, and George followed her the next year.

That's all I can remember "extempore," but I'll look at my MAXSON information and see if I can come up with anything else. Hope I haven't been "carrying coals to Newcastle!" (Meaning: giving you information you already have.)

Have a good day...cousin?

Thanks so much for your very welcome message. A mixture of old news and new, but certainly some very interesting leads to follow. Would like to correspond directly if possible. My e-mail is Maxsonia@aol.com. I've got a it of information on the descendants of Nathan & Sylvia Palmer Maxson, and would be glad to share that and more.

Regards -- Peter
