Yes, our Alsace relatives were required to change countries at least five times from 1830 to 1900!

Your question concerning France & Germany probably refers to a source that was called " Prussia " for many years. This area would have included border countries both in Germany & France that were on the Rhine River. In France , it would be the Alsace/Lorraine etc.. area ...
It can be confusing but when you research the census' in the U., S. , search source countries as Prussia, Germany, France, Deutschland or the regions ( Hesse etc...). You will find that they will change in different census' depending on which country now was in posession of that region.
Good luck.

Is anyone a relative of the Schlernitzauers who hailed from Lorraine, France. My Great Great Grandfather's name was Matthias married to Mary. Great Great Grandmother Sophia married Henry Miller. They were all glassblowers..and settled originally in N. J. - then upstate New York & Pennsylvania. They immigrated from Le'Havre to the U. S. in approx. 1845. I have info on all the children and cousins.........Nicholas Schlernitzauer was a son and a brother.

"Historic Pittsburgh" site lists Schlernitzauer-Dusch marriage...both from Alsace. Contact me privately for more details on the Dusch side. These were also a family of glass workers.

HI Paul,

That sounds very interesting as most of the Schlernitzauers in the United States were connected. I do know that the glassworking families of New York, Penn.,Illinois etc.. usually were relatives. I would like to contact you directly but do not have an e-mail to do that.

Let me know how to proceed.
JK

Hi there,

Thank you for the lead. I read the information and they are definitely relatives. I believe the original immigrants were Matthias Schlernitzauer - Nicholas Schlernitzauer & possibly Peter Schlernitzauer... They all hail from Moselle , Lorraine, France. Troisfontaine is a small village that is in that area. Schlernitzauers were in Gloucester County , New Jersey originally - then to Verona County , New York - then Pennsylvania when Pittsburgh Plate and Glass essentially shut down the plants on the Erie Canal...My relatives went to Ottawa, Illinois....Some stayed in New York a while longer - Some were in Penn.... Allegheny County....
Hope this rings a bell........
Thanks again..
JK
