Surnames: Warren Clay
I am researching relatives of my Grandfather, who originated in Shropshire, England. His mother had a sister, Mary Clay (also known as Polly) who married John Warren and emigrated to Australia in 1878. They had 9 children, all born in Australia - James, Mary (died in infancy), Charles, Edith, John, Ethel, Walter, Olive and Andrew (also died in infancy). We know that my great aunt was in contact with someone from this side of the family during World War 2, when they sent food parcels to her in England. Another relative may also have been in contact in the 1970s. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Do you have any idea what part of Australia they lived in? It's a big place!

I have since found out that they emigrated on the 'Southesk' in August 1878, and the children were born in Queensland (except for John, the eldest). Thats about as far as I have got at the moment.

Hello,

My name is Kathleen Lambourne and I have just come across your message on the website.

I am the great grand-daughter of John Warren and Mary Ann (Clay).

My Grandparents were Francis and Edith Eliza Bull (nee Warren).

John Warren who died in 1946 actually lived with my parents and Grandmother for the first 6 years of my life and I remember him very well indeed.

There are few errors in the very detailed list which was sent to you in 2008.

- 1991 Bronwyn Ruth & Alexander Skirving are not descendants

- 1988 & 1991 Leonard Raymond Armstrong 5/44 Kitchener St & 4/19 Weston Street Coorparoo is not a relative.

My father Leonard Ray Armstrong, husband of Edith Mary, died in 1978. All his relatives came from Creswick Victoria.

As the eldest grand-daughter of Francis and Edith Bull I have a fair bit of knowledge of members of my grandmother's family. She lived with us all our growing up years, dying when I was 23, so I have a lot of knowledge from the stories she told as well as some very old newspaper clippings.

I knew Ethel Warren who married Ern Allitt and lived in North Brighton, Melbourne, Victoria as well as Olive Warren who married Frank Denny and lived for many years in Toowoomba, Queensland.

I would love to share any knowledge I have of John Warren,
or any others of his descendants.

Two of my sisters Ruth and Helen as well as my husband Dennis and myself are actually on a pilgrinage to Stanthorpe, Pozieres and Killarney tomorrow, Saturday 21 August, to Frank Bull's apple orchard at Pozieres and the school my mother attended.

I have visted John And Mary Ann's grave at Killarney General Cemetery several times -

Warren, John, b. 1852, d. 1946, s/w Mary Ann Warren
Warren, Mary Ann, b. 1855, d. 1933, s/w John Warren

Look forward to hearing from you.

Cheers from Down Under,

Kathleen

Hello Kathleen

It's lovely to get some new information after all this time!

Before I started researching, all we knew about our connections with Australia was that Grandpa's Auntie Polly went to Australia, and someone sent parcels during the war.
Auntie Polly was in fact Mary Warren (nee Clay)and she emigrated in 1878 with her husband John Warren. As yet I haven't been able to trace John Warren in the UK.

These are the two preceding generations, in Shropshire:-

WILLIAM CLAY 1819 - 1901
Born Clive Shropshire, occupation variously servant, agricultural labourer, gardener depending on the census.
(I have the original marriage certificate for my Great Grandmother Ada Clay where he is listed as a farmer, and a copy of her birth certificate where he is a farm labourer).

Married ANN AUSTIN (1827 - 1907 born Woodhouses, Shropshire) in Whitchurch, 28 Dec 1846. We don't think she could read or write - she 'made her mark' on Ada's birth certificate.

Their children were:-

1846 Hannah (servant)
1850 Mary (died 1851)
1852 William
1854 Mary (Polly) (your Great Grandmother)
1857 Eliza (servant) (also emigrated to QLD in 1886, married Richard Beeston)
1859 Richard (died 1866)
1862 Henry (farm servant)
1864 Charlotte (servant)
1867 Ada (also known as Edith) domestic servant - my Great Grandmother
1871 Richard (servant)
1872 William (may have died as a child)

Mary, on the 1871 census is an inmate at Wem Union Workhouse. She appears to have married sometime after that, before emigrating.

Before I was contacted by someone else in Australia, we didn't realise that Mary's sister Eliza had followed her to Australia.

We have found out that my Grandfather's sister Marjory (Madge) was in contact with (we think) Mary's family during the 2nd World War. Madge's daughter (also a Kathleen) remembers things arriving from Australia when she was a little girl (most memorably tins of jam!)

I will update my information from what you have sent me - I had realised there may be discrepancies in the list I was sent before.

If you have Google Maps with street view, have a look at Clive, Shropshire, Wem,and Prees Heath. A lot of it is now housing estates, but you might get an idea of what the area may have been like.

I would be very interested in hearing about John Warren and his descendants. My Mum (aged 83)asks regularly if I have heard any more from Australia.

Best wishes

Anne
