Peter BRUHNHOLTZ/BRUNHOLS was in New Holstein, Calumet County in 1855, 1860 & 1870 with his wife Anna Margaretha and son Hartwig. Declaration of Intent filed in 1872. A Chilton history mentions Miss Brunhols/now Mrs ARPS in the drama group. His son married Johanna MEINERT at New Holstein in 1873. The census of 1880 shows Catherine Bruhnholtz, as mother, in the house of Claus THEISSEN, a butcher. Grandma born in 1894 said she had no grandparents, but they were related to the SCHRADERS, as she pronounced it. Could use any help with Peter & family, have family of Hartwig to share. Jean

I have been working with Terri Lee with my family Genealogy in Calumet County. She is the best for getting information both in and out of that county.
She has done extensive work in the Calumet County area and has filled in many missing gaps in my research.
She does not charge for the information and is one of the best researchers you can get hands down. I am just so excited with her work, I had to share her.
E-mail her directly jtlee@excel.net

From the New Holstein Centennial Souvenir Booklet 1848-1948; "....the young and popular wife of the senior John H. Arps, Amalia Brunholz Arps,....". Trying to find if she belonged to my Brunholtz family, as a daughter of Peter. Jean

Have a John H. Arps married to Wilhelmine Hanssen with childrens names of Edward Arps m. Wilhelmine Funke (a cousin), Albert Arps m. Wilhelmine Boie, Gustuv Arps m. (1) Mary (2) Nell, Otto Arps m. (1) ? (2) Fanella Jackson and Bruno Arps who died during childhood. I have no biography on John H. Arps, other than he was a resident of New Holstein, Wisconsin and a stepson of Amalia Arps. Who Amalia was married to or how she fits in I do not know. Wilhelmine Hanssen is the daughter of Cecilia C. Oesau and Andreas Hanssen. Cecilia Oesau is Claus Oesau and Jabe Christina Claassen oldest daughter, my great great great grandparents.
The brothers Otto, Edward, Albert and Gustav acquired a hardware enterprise in Ouray, Colorado (Arps Brothers Hardware Company) and a cabinet manufacturing business and food market in southern California. Have more on the brothers if it may help. Seems the family settled in Colorado and California areas. Have an e-mail address of a Ellen Catharina Arps who is the daughter of Gustav Arps if you want. Sally

Sounds as if Amalia is a second wife of John H. Arps Sr., the theater article that mentions her, as the wife of John H. Arps Senior, seems to be from the 1876 centennial celebration. A mention of the Golden anniversary of New Holstein in 1898 mentions "John Arps was busy setting up windmills and pumps and his sons became experts in making by hand, tin
dishes, milk cans and strainers. The 1898 article doesn't name him as John Sr. Although it doesn't look like Amailia was mother to any of John's children, perhaps the address you offered would help. Thank you, Jean ( jloehde@aol.com)

Sally, I may have some more details about the Arps of New Holstein, Calumet County, as the result of research on the siblings of Elise Boie, my gg-grandmother. Her youngest sister was Wilhelmine Boie who married Albert Arps, as you noted.

Using the Castle Garden database, I believe I have found the family of John Arps Sr. arriving on 30 Apr 1849 from Germany on the vessel the Howard. He is listed as J. Arps, his wife as Sophia Arps, and the children matching those in Calumet County census records including the child John Arps, who was four years old. He in turn was the father of the four sons you have listed.

I am primarily interested in Albert Arps. He was not only in the hardware business, he also was involving in mining and served in the Colorado Legislature briefly according to a Who's Who entry. After their years in Ouray, Albert, Minnie and their son Elwyn settled in Denver. I can trace them through the 1930 Census. I would like to know their years of death and resting places if possible. Do you have anything more about him?

I would also like to know if Elwyn Arps was the husband of Louisa Ward Arps, a noted Colorado librarian, historian and author. Several pieces of data point in that direction but I really need confirmation.

I would appreciate receiving the e-mail address of Ellen Catharina Arps, the daughter of Gustav Arps, as I believe she could help me.

Thank you.
Barbara

Barbara,
Albert died Nov. 13, 1952, Wilhelmine, Oct.13, 1957. Don't know where buried but would assume Denver Colorado as Albert had another business called Denver Stove House, Inc. with son Elwyn. Elwyn married Louisa Alkinson Ward, b. Denver, June 20, 1901 who was daughter of Ethelbert and Ada Smith Ward. She wrote 5 books, such as Denver In Slices (Sage Press, Denver, 1959). They were last known to reside in Denver.
Believe Denver Stove House business open till 1958.
E-mail address of Ellen Catharina Arps is several years old but here it is -- earps@a2000.nl
I have lots more info to much to type here. Info on Gustav, Gordon, John L., Lewis and Otto. My e-mail is sanunamaker57958@aol.com
Thank you for the info on John Arps Sr. Will look into info on the Castle Garden database.
Good Luck
Sally

Sally,
Thank you! This information helps me complete a series of brief biographical sketches of the children of Nicholas Boie and Cecilia Tonner Boie, from the eldest, Elise Boie,, wife of Ferdinand Hachez and my gg-grandmother, through the youngest, Wilhelmine Boie, wife of Albert Arps. Nicholas, Cecilia and Elise came from Holstein, Germany, to New Holstein, Wisconsin, where the other siblings were born.

I would enjoy corresponding with those interested in the Boie, Hachez and Luehr families of New Holstein.
