I am looking for information about civil war units drawn from Rockingham County. My great great grandfather Turner Carter was in the war and lost a leg, and I was interested in discovering more ancestors who fought in the war, what units they served in, what campaigns these units fought in and any other related information I can find for a family history.

Just noticed that you asked about any Carter's that were part of the Rockingham Co. Regt. My great great Grandfather Thomas Benjamin Carter was a private with the 13th regt, I company. He enlisted on May 05, 1861 and was discharged on Oct. 09, 1861 due to a disability. I have tried to find him after that in the 1870 North Carolina Census but was unable to locate him. I have also had no luck locating his wife Martha Walker and feel both of them had passed away. His children Robert age 16 and William age 19 were found living with a William Loftus as farm laborers. No record of his daughters Sarah A and Mary E could be found, but Sarah could have married and Mary would have been 14 in that 1870 census. Could anyone help me find there what happen to them.? Thank you Colleen Burdess at cburdess@netzero.net.

I am not related to Turner but am researching him as his family were neighbors of mine and they all served together. I found a bunch of information specifically on what happened to his leg and would be happy to share it--hospital dates, nature of injury, all kinds of stuff you might like. Turner enlisted from Belle Isle, which was an on-again-off-again Confederate prison at the time. He was 18. Do you know what the heck he was doing THERE?

He seemed to be in and out of trouble most of his service, if not his life, as I found that he was under guard again the following year! An interesting character, I'm sure.

Jay,
My Great Grandfather James Ruffin Turner was in Company A 45th Regiment NC. The records do not show a Carter in Company A but no roster records were not shown for Mar 1..Apr 29 1864 and none after Feb 28, 1865.

My info is from NC STATE UNIVERSITY PRINT SHOP Raleigh NC - NORTH CAROLINA TROOPS 1861 1865.
