ADAIR PASSES AWAY
Funeral services were held Mondayafternoon at 2:30 in the
ADAIR Methodist Church for
Dabney C. Hughes, pioneer resident of this county and former state representative. Mr. Hughes passed away on Sunday following a year of failing health. His condition of late, however, was somewhat improved , and he made a visit to
Pryor only a few days before he took a sudden turn for the worse from which he did not rally.
Old residents of
ADAIR stated the funeral was one of the largest ever held in that city, due the wide aquainesces of Mr. Hughes, who had been a resident of that neighborhood for more than 50 years. He was a native of
Springfield,
Ky, and came to this country from
Texas in 1885, settling on the farm place where he has lived since that time. He was born September 9, 1855, and was 81 years, three months and 18 days of age at the time of his death.
Mr. Hughes has been active in the development of this countyand in state and county politicsfor many years. He served hree terms as state representative from
Mayes County, attending the second, sixth and 14th legislatures. He also served two terms as county commissioner from his district, from 1914 to 1918, and announced as a candidate for the same office last spring. He took an active interest in political affairs of the state until the past year and introduced
Senator T P
Gore when he appeared here for his the last campaign speech during the summer.
He was married on June 5, 1905, to Miss
Ada Douglas, who with their son,
Cosby, survive him. He is also survived by a neice, Mrs. Susie Bryan, of Nashville, Tenn, and two nephews, George
Irving of Detroit,
Mich, and Mr. B
Burgess of
Sherman, Tex.
Mr. Hughes has been a church member for many years, uniting early in life with the Presbyterian church, later transferring his membership to the church at
ADAIR where he served several years as elder.
The Rev. Grant Tetar, pastor of the Church of God of
Pryor, was assisted in the funeral services by Rev. Theron McKisson, pastor of the
ADAIR Methodist church. Reverend
Teter Preached from the 11th chapter of St. John, using the 25th verse for his text: "I am the resurection and the life: he that believeth in me, though he wer dead, yet shall he live." Reverend
McKesson read the 23rd
Psalm and led in prayer. Some time ago Mr.Hughes informed the choir leader what songs he wanted sung at his funeral and as nearly as possible his wishes were carried out.
The body was laid to rest in
ADAIR cemetery under the direction of Moore's funeral home of
Pryor.
