Tell Me About Your Mystery James Robinson/Robertson!

Surnames: Robertson Provoost Provost Robinson
This is a last-ditch effort on my part. We have no idea where our James Robinson, who is called "James Robertson" on official documents, came from. On his grave in the old Piscataway burial grounds in Edison, New Jersey (now St. James Episcopal Church Cemetery) it states that he was born in 1744 and died in 1825.
He was married to Catharine Provoost/Provost, the daughter of Jonathan Provost of the influential New York City Provost family; and Adrianna Springsteen.
Catherine was born circa 1750 and died in 1831 in Piscataway, New Jersey. She is buried in the same cemetery as James.
Their children were James, Jonathan, Peter Praa, Aletta, Margaret, Sarah, Joel and Maria.
James was listed as a shipbuilder in colonial New York City directories and may have also been a merchant. His sons were tobacco merchants.
They belonged to the Dutch Reformed Church.
James and Catherine lived on George's Road in New Brunswick, Middlesex, New Jersey before the Revolution and in New York City afterward until 1815 when they retired to Piscataway, New Jersey.

***If you have a mystery James Robinson or Robertson (or a variant on these names) in your tree of whom nothing is known, who was born between 1735-1755, will you please let me know!
He could have come from anywhere, but in order to have married into the Provoost family, one would think that a fine pedigree would have been required.

We have a James Robinson born in the 1740's or 1750's in Antrim, IRE. He was the fourth son of James Robinson, JP 1700-1769. James was an heir (who would have been under age) in the will of his father, who bequeathed 5pounds sterling to him annually for his natural life. The next mention of James is "believed to have immigrated to America" in family history completed in 1905. Later family immigrated to Canada, NY, PA, MI, OH.

It is believed this James' sister, Jane Robinson Knox may have been married to famous Revolutionary War Hero, John Knox.

Please reply to me @ fktnyy@gmail.com I could not reach you through your Lycos address.

This is exactly the kind of response I was hoping for! A couple of questions:
1. What was James Sr's occupation? Was there a family trade that you are aware of?
2. What was their religion? My James had children into his late 50's and I have wondered if he might have been a closet Catholic...
3. Which family members emigrated to New York?
4. Were they Irish or just English in Northern Ireland? My heritage has been said to be Dutch and English... no Irish... although due to prejudice it may have been wise to simply say British or English!
5. Catherine Robinson's family (Provost) were revolutionists. All five of her brothers served in the War for the duration. We believe James served as well. Having a sister married to John Knox would have certainly made old man Provost happy! His family crest was redesigned to say "for liberty" in Latin...

Contact me. Perhaps we have solved two mysteries...
Regards,
Santo

I have a James Robinson that is a true Mystery, but he live in the southwest corner of MO. He traveled to TX, AR, OK and maybe other areas; but we can not find out where he came from. One report has him B Apr 1832 in OH, he D Oct 1903 in OK. His wife was Martha A Mitchell B Oct 1842 in VA and D Jan 1892 in Harrison Co. MO.

They had 7 children that I can account for: Edward (abt 1866 IA), Hetty/Hattie (Abt 1870 MO), Eunitta "Rettie" (26 Apr 1873 MO-13 Aug 1913 KS), Leonard (15 Jul 1875 MO-17 Apr 1924 MO), Marshall [grandfather] (20 Arp 1880 MO-20 Dec 1954 MO), Lizzie (1883 ?MO?)

I realize this is a long shot but is there a possibility that your James son moved to OH to build river boats?

Unfortunately no... My James had three sons:
James died in 1816 in New York City as a young man. His son James is accounted for as well.
Jonathan died NJ in an epidemic in 1844 with several other Robinsons.
Peter Praa lived in NJ until 1865.

Most of these ancestors carried the name James through several generations; however, I haven't found any reference to any of them moving westward.
James Robinson did have a daughter named Aletta, or Hetty. I know very little of her.
Thank you though! This is what I was hoping for! If I happen upon something that might help you, I will post it!

Hi Dianne,

I really don't have any further information except the fact that Jane Knox was mentioned as a daughter of James Robinson, JP who lived and died in Ballymoney, Antrim, IRE. He was born in 1699 or 1700 and died in 1769. He may have been born in Ayre, Scotland or in Antrim, IRE. The Robinsons had holdings in Scotland and Ireland up into the late 1800's.

I believe Jane was born about 1840 and was married to ___Knox by 1769 as she was in the will as Jane Knox and she received a lump sum inheritance instead of 5 pounds yearly for her natural life as two of six children received (probably the youngest two.)
