I am researching (for my dissertation) churches that were organized prior to the Civil War and African American churches that were organized immediately after the Civil War. Please contact me if you have any narrative histories or lists of members.

Generations of my father's family are buried at Shiloh Baptist Church (est 1840) at Cotton Hill, Clay County, GA. There are two cemeteries at this church, one white and the other black. My mother was a member of the Fort Gaines Methodist Church (est 1822). Many of the other churches in the area were established before the civil war. Brief histories of these early churches are available on the Clay Co genealogy site. In 1851 Clay County was created from Randolph and Early Counties which also have many churches established in the early 1800s. There is a partial membership list of the Cuthbert Baptist Church (est 1831) on the Randolph site. The history of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church (est 1822) records "... One slave member, Joe Callaway, after being "Freed" became a very noted preacher among his race." New Bethel Baptist (est 1839) records ". . . On June, 1852 the records show that a colored sister, the property of William Norwood, presented herself for membership by letter and was received . . . "

Some information on these churches is available online via the GAGenWeb.
