Hi Donna,
I have come across a couple of Schmitts on familysearch.org..My ancestor's name was Catharina Schmidt/Smith. She used Smith more often, I think she used the former only two times in the records on FamilySearch. She was born in Metz, Moselle, Lorraine, France on 28 Oct 1829 and died 10 Apr 1906 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I found that she was born in Metz from her grandson, who is now deceased. I just talked to his daughters over the weekend who gave me this info.
There was a Schmidt family living in Franklin, Milwaukee, WI in 1880 that was from Alsace-Frederic Schmidt, who was born abt 1831, which makes me wonder if they're related....
Thanks,
Samantha

We have Cincinnati Schmidt and Schmitt and their decedents. Ours were Alsace Lorraine which was an annex of Bavaria until the later 1800s. It then became part of France. The Mossell River by the Rhine River seems to be their hometown area. Look into the Franco Prussian War for dates. Prussia was one of the many states of Germany but the most powerful. They also owned the land of that Rhine valley for awhile. Prussia started the 1st Reich and the Prussian Army is still studied today for it's making of a soldier. Our Schmitt/Schmidt married an Ehrmann (Jews) before coming to the USA. Hope this helps. Some of the records here called them Smith before the WWI draft standardized sir name spellings.
