My sister and I are researching the Skipworth family name. What we are trying to do is connect our family, the Skipworth's, to their Cherokee heritage. John Hibit Skipworth was are gggrandpa, his dad was Jesse Mcguire Skipworth and his dad was James B. Skipworth. If anyone has proof of the Skipworth's being on the Final Indian rolls(Dawes Rolls), I would greatly apprecited if you would share it with me. I do know that James B. was married to Mary Rich and she was part Cherokee Indain but there is no proof on the rolls. If anyone has any information on this subject or any infor. on the Skipworth's please email me.

Brenda,
My gr. grandmother, Iva (Hancock) Alcorn who lived in Jefferson Twp., Pike Co., Indiana, told us that her grandmother was a Skipworth and was an "Indian" . She said that "the Skipworth married an Irishman" whom I believe she said was Benjamin Clark. I believe they (the Benjamin Clarks) lived in Southern Illinois near Centrailia. I have always wanted to find out what Native American Nation I was descended from. What was yours? Julie

Shirley, my Skipworth line runs as follows:
parents: Charlie James Skipworth, Jr. & Mida Elizabeth Massey,
grandparents: Charlie James Skipworth, Sr., & Gertrude (Gertie) Bay Jay,
g.gp.: George Ambrose Skipworth & Tanie Bell Upchurch,
gg. gp.: George Washington Skipworth & Laura Vaughan
George tell of being Chereokee, on the Guion Miller Roll.
ggg. gp.: James Bonaparte Skipworth & Mary Ann "Polly" Rich (Polly Rich),
gggg. gp.: Richard Skipworth & Sarah 'unknown'.
I am stuck at Richard. I found a hint that his parents MAY BE Nathan & Nancy but I HAVE NO PROOF.
I also would like to know if you know of a Robert Skipwith associated with our family. He was born around 1811, Amelia Co., Virginia. He married Jane Rolfe Bolling. He stated he had NO CHILDREN.
Happy New Year Cousin!!

Shirley, thank you for the clarification. I have read Newton's middle name as Varny and Vany. I thought Vany but was not sure. THANK YOU.

Do you have ANY INFORMATION on Richard & Sarah Skipworth/Skipper that you will share with me??? I am at a dead end & need a new path to search.

All the Indian information I have for our Skipworth family is just word-of-mouth---no proof. You probably know more than I.
1. George Washington Skipworth stated his Cherokee
heritage came from his Rich family.
2. On the computer I found that Mary Ellen Hooker was
Cherokee per her relatives: Morning Strong-Smith,
Sarah Strong-Odle, Jack Odle, & Rachel Odle-Savage.
3. William & Mary Hooker Rich's son, Jeremiah, married
Sidney Lowery who is said to have been Cherokee by her
great granddaughter, Anne Bell Culbertson.
If you have more, or differing, information on our Skipworth Indian heritage PLEASE share it with me.
Thank you for your help!!!

Hello... thanks for returning my email and would like to know if the info on polly hooker is from other relatives from the web? I have alot of information from Theresa Shands. I did find a George W. Skipworth where an application was filed for a roll number. This came from the Dawes or Guiolon Miller roll I can't remember which. the Application number is 16068. The only info was the name and the app. number and the state was IT which stood for Indian Territory. That meant an application was filed but who else filed with him and was this the right George W. and what was the year, I don't know. I can't find anything on Pollly Hooker other than wife of William. Let me know if you know anything about this. Shirley

I have quite a few "Rich" applications [that was shared with me from a very kind distant cousin] not a one of these Rich applications passed; all tried through Mary HOOKER Rich

Marilyn this will help you and Shirley a bit to clear up George W. Shipworth and his Indian Application.

No: 16068 Action: Reject
Reasons: It does not appear that applicant ancestors were parties to treaties of 1835-36-46#16068
George Washington Skipworth

On this same Indian Application G.W. lists Newton V as "Varny" however I have Newton's death record that record states "N.V."...John Ben Skipworth was his informant and son.
On census James B. and Mary lists his name as Newton Vany.
It's a toss up as to which one is really his name. Huh???

I have him listed as Newton Vany on all my documentations...reason being Varny just doesn't sound quite right...and by reading the census as Vany I decided to go that route.

If any one has any information on Richard or Sarah Skipworth and or children I would appreciate any or all help.

Teresa Shands and I have worked together for several years on the Skipworth whole surname trying to piece together where each family belongs. Quite a job for two people to start with until Teri started getting in touch with more and more people. She is a wonderful cousin to have.

I desend from James B. and wife Mary "Polly" Rich their son Ausman B. and wife Martha Ann Burnett [Burn it] their son Perry Staggs and wife Emma May Lawhorn my parents Warren Jason Ellis Jr. and Frankie L Skipworth then Debbie Ellis Hill and husband David Hill.

Hope this helps someone.
