Hi:

I'm looking for any information on the Baggott family who supposedly came from Wales in 1766 to "settle in Halifax on the Staer River in North Carolina." This is from a note from a great-great grandfather. I know Parker Baggott was born around 1775, and later moved to South Carolina where he married and raised a family. I don't know where the Staer River is.

Any information on Baggotts in Halifax greatly appreciated. I'm happy to share what I do have from the SC side.

Barbara

I have searched several antique atlases and the US Geological Survey's GNIS database looking for a STAER River in North Carolina or ANYwhere on this planet. I haven't located one. Do you have any additional information about this river?

I know my Baggotts were on the Edisto River in South Carolina. I even have a hand-drawn map of the old homestead where Elisha and his children were born.

I know Pr. Baggit is listed in the 1810 SC Federal Census but Ancestry.com has "lost" that page in their database. Do you know Parker's age bracket in 1810? Do you know who his parents were?

Hope to hear from you,
Vickey

Hi:

I have the 1810 census page with P. Baggit, Orangeburg, SC. Page 127 c (6/25 on ancestry.com when I printed it)

Males:
Under 10 - 2
10-15 - 2
26-44 - 1
Females:
Under 10 - 3
10-15 - 1
Over 45 - 1

My great grandfather was James Allen Williams, son of Lydia Baggott and John D. Williams. James wrote a "History of Orangeburg" in 1893. In that manuscript he stated: "The Baggotts came from Wales in 1766, and settled in Halifax on the Staer River in North Carolina. They later came to Columbia, SC.

Parker Baggott married Lydia Lavinia Williams of Columbia. There was quite a romance to the marraige as they were cousins, and her own brother Joseph Williams performed the marriage ceremony.

Their daughter Lydia Baggott married John D. Williams, also originally from North Carolina."

I have been looking for Parker and information on him for years. I, too, cannot locate the river, nor conclusive proof Parker's family was from NC. Though there are Baggotts in NC.

I did find a listing for a Parker Baggott on the marrige records for NC I think it was in 1897, but not to Lavinia Williams. That bride could have died in time for him to marry Lavinia ca 1800. I have never found anything further on those Williams. Nor on Parker. I also wondered if Lydia (daughter) married a Williams cousin when she married John D.

Anything you can share on the early Baggotts would be wonderful! Do you know where Parker and/or Lavinia are buried?

Best, Barbara

I am married to a direct descendant of John D. and Lydia Williams and have all the Williams line if you are interested. He came to SC from NC and I suspect knew the Baggotts as he and his two brothers were also from Wales. Let me know if you are interested in the Williams line.

Hi Judith:

I am a direct descendant of John D. Williams and Lydia Baggott Williams as well and would love to have more information on that line. I can get back to John D and his father Abraham.

Any information you have would be wonderful. I am most definitely interested.

Best wishes,
Barbara

Hi, Barbara,
I am interested to know about John D. Williams' father and how you found that information. I have put my information on a public tree, but will be happy to send you what I have. The family story is that John's father or mostly likely a grand-father fought in Rev. War in NC but I have not ever found that link.
About the Staer river, I have no hope of finding it but land records for Halifax may help locate the NC Baggotts and possibly the Williams. In the 1810 census record, J.Williams is living next to P.Baggott. No children but what may have been his mother. Then in 1850, living next to Elisha Baggott is one Lydia Williams, age 67 (b. 1783) who would have been about the right age to be the wife of Parker Baggott. So the search goes on to connect all the dots.
Let me know what you need. I have the names and birth years of the children of John D. and Lydia Baggott Williams.
Which of James A. Williams' children is your line? Ours is Edward B. Williams.
Regards, Judy
