Am searching for information on the village of Chenier Caminata and the Dupre-Terrebonnes who lived there.

My grandfather Duroc Joseph Terrebonne (26 JUN 1873-MAR 1938) lived on Cheniere Camanada, Jefferson Parish,Lainn 1893 when he and others fled the hurricane of 1 OCT 1893 by boating to and settling in what is now Westwego, La., later marrying Bernadette Barrios from Lockport, La./Ama, Lainn 1900. My mother, Bertha Anastasia Terrebonne, born in 1903, had two first cousins who had spouses with the surname Dupry.

I am related to the Terrebonne family. Most of the Terrebonne's left Chenier Caminada after the big hurricane. A lot of them settled in Lafourche Parish, but my side settled in Westwego, La. Jefferson Parish. I have been told that Dupre was the original name. The name was changed after they left Canada. They took the name of the Terrebonne from the town they lived in. Since I posted that message, I have found my husband's gggggrandfather Paul Dupre Terrebonne was born in Chenier Caminada in 1795, but soon after moved to Lafourche Parish with his parents Guillaume and Francoise Margotta. There is a recent genealogy posted in the Oct. '99 Acadian Genealogy Exchange going back to the 1600's that you might want to look at. Thanks again for your reply.

There is a 60 page article on Louis LeComte Dupre (Montreal 1654)and his son, Jacque Dupre Terrebonne, married Anne Marie Bienvenu (came to Louisiana in 1723) in genealogical periodical, 2000, Imperial St. Landry Parish Gen. & His. Society, PO Box 108, Opelousas, La. 70571-0108. I think they will send you the article if you join. Almost every fact has citations to verify information.
