Sarah Spelman b: 29 February 1784 d: 13 April 1853 daughter of Timothy Spelman married my 4th Great Grandfather Hugh Kelley. I have recently found out that the Spelman was spelt wrong when they Spelman family had a street named after them. From what I have researched the Spelman/Spellman/ Spileman/ Espileman goes back to England as far as the late 1300s. You can contact me at brodeurd001@hawaii.rr.com Nice meeting you!

Checked my copy of the Spelman Genealogy
by Fannie Barbour and there was no listing
for Francis M. "Frank" Spelman.
Am still in pursuit of any info on a
Chester Spelman, husband to Grace Arnold
who died in 1927. Suppose to be buried in a
Cleveland, Ohio suburb but I have no other info.
He would have been my great grandfather.

I will keep your Chester Spelman in mind as I search. For all I know he could be a brother to my g grandmother Ida Spelman. There is an 8 or 9 year gap between her birth and the next sibling that I know of. That would have been a bit unusual back then. I'm pretty sure there are more siblings that left home before the 1900 Census, where I found this family. Also the fact that Ida's brother Lewis Spelman lived in Cleveland after leaving home, makes me wonder. If you see anything that might relate to my Spelman family please contact me at sbarb@interbel.net Thanks, Barbara

If you go to any law library and look up the name Sir Henry Spelman you will find he wrote the first English Law dictionary in the 12th C. You can forget those other names there were one "L" spelman that early in England.

I have just been trawling through the Spel(l)man messages because my grandmother's maiden name was Spelman. The story about the street name in the East End of London is also part of my family's verbal history, which, if these branches are not connected, is a little odd to say the least. I have hit a brick wall with my Spel(l)man ancestors. The earliest information I have is that my great-great grandfather Thomas was born in Bethnal Green in Middlesex (London) in 1823. His father's name was John and they were ropemakers. It seems that Thomas fell out with the family because in 1849 he was living in Chatham Kent where he had a daughter Susannah by Eliza Ann (Churcher/Brewington/Honeyman -don't ask) who was about 16 at the time. they didn't marry until 1860. They had a further ninesurviving children between 1859 and 1877. Does anybody have any information about John in Bethnal Green?
Thanks, Christina
