Elijah and Willis m. to Nancy1860-80

My grandmother told me that her grandmother, Nancy Samples, married two Attaway brothers. Her first husband died during the Civil War so she married the second. Her first husband was Elijah Attaway,b.1821, SC. They are listed on the 1860 census of Wood Co. TX. Their daughter, Selena, my g-grandmother is in Montague Co. TX in the 1880 census. So is Willis Attaway with a wife named Nancy. In Wood Co his wife was Milburry Riddle. Are Willis and Elijah brothers? Who are their parents? These seem to be the brothers of our family lore. Can anyone help??

My husband's ancestor was Elisha Attaway of Wood/Hopkins County, TX. I show his wife to be Nancy SAMPSON (which may or may not be right). He did die in the Civil War and she remarried his brother, Willis.

I've worked on this family in the past and am a little rusty on it, but Nancy and Elisha are buried at the Black Oak Baptist Church Cemetery in Hopkins County near the Wood County line. She was born 10 Jan 1821 in North Carolina and died 4 May 1916. Elisha's tombstone says he was born in 1822 and died in 1864. I don't know when or where Willis died.

Elisha and Willis were the sons of David Attaway and Rebecca________. They are also buried at Black Oak.

Elisha and Nancy's son James David Attaway (their oldest, I believe) was my husband's gr-gr-grandmother.

Have you heard the family tradition that Nancy SAMPSON was part Cherokee Indian? From the 1880 census, she says her father was born in Ireland, so she can't be more than half Indian, but my husband's grandmother always said that she had Indian blood.

Would love to swap information with you! My e-mail address is dstuart101@aol.com.

Candis, 6, F, W, At home, Tex
Francis, 4, F, W, At home, Tex
I would hazard to say that, Sarah, Elliot, Margret, David C. and Wyley (Millie) are Willis's children. Elizabeth and Candis belong to Elisha and Nancy. Francis is theirs, Willis and Nancy, if Elisha died in 1864 during the Civil War.

In 1880, Montague Co., TX
1 1/9 Attaway, Willis, W, M, 52, Md, Farmer, SC, SC, SC
Nancy, W, F, 59, Wife, Md, Keeping house, NC, Ireland, NC
Millie, W, F, 18, Dau, S, At home, TX, SC, NC
Candise, W, F, 16, Dau, S, At home, TX, SC, NC
Francis, W, F, 13, Dau, S, At home, TX, SC, NC

Willis Attaway was the father of Margarette who married a Smith and had two sons, Warren and Robert. She was a widow before 1880 and married my great-uncle Henry Jackson Clay in Montague Co., TX in 1881. She died in May 1894 in Maxwell, Pontotoc Co., OK of complications due to childbirth.

Thought this might help to track Willis and Nancy. The info on her birth and death will fill a blank spot for her.

Regards,
Charles

Hi, I'm not sure if this will help or not. I have a David Attaway as the brother of William R. Attaway. William R. Attaway is the line I am descendant of. Anyway, David Attaway b.1798 in South Carolina, married Rebecca Browne, and they have many children, I won't list them all here, but I do know they have a son, Elisha Attaway b. unknown, and Willis b. unknown. They were both born in Spartanburg, SC.

Any Attaway history you have, I would appreciate, even if it overlaps what I already have, everything helps.
Hope this helps you.

Hi Gary! Yes, I have since found that David and Rebecca are the parents of my ancestor Elisha (or Elijah) Attaway. David and Rebecca are listed in the 1850 Van Zandt Co Census of Texas. and David as head of family in Henderson Co, TN in 1840 and 1830. I have his parents as Joseph Attaway and Christine Hastili. Does this match your info? Do you have more?

I have David's parents listed as Joseph B. Attaway, and Jane Wilcox, David has a brother named William R. Attaway (b. 1803) (d. 1835) William was married to Nicey Draper

I am pretty sure the information I have is accurate

That's probably right. I got those names off of the internet and didn't document them. I'm still trying to document the earlier names better.

I got all most of my info from a 2nd cousin of mine, named Nelda (Kimbrough) Young (daughter of Albert G. Kimbrough and Christine Agnes Attaway). Christine is my great aunt. amd she is still living. Nelda has been researching this for about 8 years, and our family handed down documentation of the family, so it's kind of been a little easy for us. What I've been trying to do is get dates and more in depth information on the older generations of my family. If you need some help with any other Attaway stuff, email me directly if you like, and I will help you with all I can.

I am researching the Attaway family background. I am new to the study of genealogy. Since I have just began my search I have no specific information. I queried ancestry.com about my great, great grandfather by the name of John Attaway and reached a lomg list of messages. I plan to read everyone and address messages where i can be of assistance. I am curious as to how the Attaway family which immigrated to either Georgia or South Carolina ended up with so many members in Texas. Not sure at this time what branch of the family you all are from I live in North Carolina
